At which gun show did we meet? I hope I told you that 4140 is used as armor plate not springs in the M-1! It is used for the boxes that hold the chobham armor. It is also a common barrel, slide and receiver steel but at lower Rockwells. I used it because when I ran Colorado Mountain Industries, we made piton hammer heads from it and not knowing a damn thing about cutlery steels I knew it would last and was capable of shrugging off vast quantities of abuse.

Very, very few blades had nickel or hard chromevery, very few! The 0170-6 we are going to be using is actually designed to be a cutlery steel. The mechanical propertiesstrength, toughness, elasticity are great but will offer an edge with a more aggressive cut and better edge retention. Carbon cuts and the 01's cut with an attitude!

Hello. The big Fisk knife was the Magnum Camp and the sharpened pry bar you are referring to is probably the RESQ-DIVTUL, although I am proud to say most BK&T stuff has been talked with about that way. The current thinking is that the initial offerings will be the Campanion, the Brute and the Tactul (RESQ-DIVTUL but a little improved).

Thanks for the "knice" comments!

Hi Bald1

The pre-Blackjack BK&T stuff was 4140 chrome moly "ordnance" steel except for the RESQ-DIVTUL which was a 440A.

A Little Background For Everyone...

I got into the knife business by accidentI wanted a Machax! I used both a variety of Kukris and an old case "Bolo" when primitive camping and thought a marriage of the two would be "peachy keen." So I thought I would make severala lifetime supply for myselfand a few for my primitive friends, and oh well, why not a nice round number around 100 etc., etc.

The Campanion was another "I want one of those." The Tactul and Divtul were knives described to me by friendsScott Taylor who is a pro diver, climber, and outdoorsmanand John Benner, SWAT Team Leader and tactical instructor extrodinaire, who both said, "I want a pry bar I can beat on things with which has a sharp edge." The Brute was a Mike design and the Magnum Camp was designed by the great Jerry Fisk.

I am very much excited by the new opportunities Camillus is giving BK&T. You should be seeing some wonderful new models both designed by me and by people whose ideas I am much enamored of.

Stay tunedgood stuff cometh!

P.S.
I will be "on the road" until September 15th...will check back then.

I would like to welcome Mr. Becker to BLADEFORUMS and encourage him to continue to visit. Ethan has been a friend for many years and I am excited about gettig to work with him here at CAMILLUS.

The members of this forums have alot to gain from Ethan's vast practical insight and design knowledge. We are planning an exciting future for the BK&T line here at CAMILLUS. One thing for sure, ANYTHING that involves Ethan Becker is ALWAYS interesting. We look forward to the involvement of the members of BF in the journey, ....enjoy the ride!

Ethan,

Thanks for setting me straight on the 4140/0170-6 issue!

I bought my original Machax from you at a show in Cincinnati. Gary Brommeland (Gary did the original leatherwork, and it was an EXCELLENT design!) was there, and I got to speak to him too. It's one of the phosphated blades and walnut handle ones. I have a pic of that original one, if you would like to see it. It was my first "custom" blade that I ever got(thanks Ethan, for starting an "affliction" and a love affair that I have to this day
smile.gif
) The Companion I DID have had the plating on the blade, and the BK&T stamp on it. I got it right when they were released.
It is so good to see you back in the knife world, and even better that your knives are going in to production again....time for "Those with Big Mouths who like to shoot them off" and those with the "mystery steels" (I think we can guess who those makers/companies are
wink.gif
) to start looking over their shoulder at the new tough puppies that are coming back on the block! Since big, tough knives are seemingly coming back into vogue now, it's time for Becker knives to arrive head and shoulders above the rest of the pack!

Welcome aboard, and don't be a stranger!

Take care,
John Johnson

What are the handles to be made of, and what sort of attachment?

How long before we could hope to see the Magnum Camp Knife or the Machax?

Ethan,

Absolutely great to have you join in here
smile.gif
!!! Thanks too for clarifying the steel issue. I'd have never guessed.

In your post you say: "The Brute was a Mike design and the Magnum Camp was designed by the great Jerry Fisk."

I guess I'm slow tonight but who is "Mike"??? (Will, feel free to answer if you know so I don't have to wait two weeks until Ethan is able to pop in again

).

The new model comment is of course titillating as you no doubt knew it would be! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Best!

MDP,
This is a question better answered by Phil, but I'll take a shot. The handles will be synthetic of some sort,...Phil is testing to make a recommendation now. The Scales will be screwed on.

Basic handle requirements are, strong, black, hard, and moldable. We just don't know which composite yet.

MDP,
As Will stated, we are still in material testing phase on the handle. One of the most prominent features of the Becker knives, IMHO, is the "work for a living" ergonomics of the handles. We must ensure that the material we choose is not only extremely strong & resilient, but also is capable of molding a smooth defect free surface throughout the complex geometry of the BK&T handles.
I'll keep you posted!
Phil

Thanks for the update, Phil. Do you have a tentative release date yet? fudo

Wow, I never knew this was how Ethan got started. That is really inspiring, to stumble upon something so successful by accident.

I'm just teasing you man, I actually did find this to be a useful thread. I like reading about E's earlier posts about how the his blades came about, different steels used and whatnot.

Yeah, I never knew the Machax was his first creation and that at one time they considered not reproducing the BK2. That would have been devistating!
