A lesson. Going to add Caladryl and Benadryl to my bag when I go out next time. To quote the movie MASH, that is all.

The only thing that bothered me was my body's reaction to 30-40 ant bites. Like I said, a sweat bee will drop me, and I'm a big guy.

if you are talking about fire ants, you're no baby. those suckers make blisters on me. i've been stung by a yellow jacket & a scorpion in the last year , they did'nt hardly leave a mark but those fire ants sure leave evidence of their visits.

I have been carrying Benadryl quick dissolve strips in my FAK

The box has 2 packs of strips. They are compact and work fast.

I left some fire ant bites improperly treated and ended up with scarring and a case of ringworm in the wounds that persists to this day. In my case, I didn't know I was being bitten up as I had just been ran through a pepper spray re-qualification (back in 2003) and I was sat down at the base of a tree afterwords to let the "burn" wear off. Buy the time someone happened by and noticed I had them swarming all over me (I couldn't even feel them) the damage had been done. Thankfully, the residual spray kept them from my face and the only exposed skin was my hands...

Fire ants are no joke -- esp. if you get 40-50 bites over a small area.

I hate ants!! Any idea what kind of ants they were? Last year in florida, after a weekend of destroying every fire ant colony I could find, I ended up getting bit/stung on my foot when just minding my own business. I guess thats karma. MY feet were burning and itchy for almost two weeks and ended up being a real nuissance

Oh yeah man... I grew up with fire ants... I'll bet no kid got greater satisfaction out of incinerating them with a magnifying glass than I did. Little bastards.

Y'all aint been bit I say, until you been bit by a Bullet Ant in the rain forests of Ecuador. That'll make the biggest dude cry like a girl. All day long...

I have had a couple of nasty run-ins with fire ants. Had one bite me on my foot once, and it lead to a quarter-sized infected blister that oozed pus for two weeks. Horrible little things.

G'day SHS

Do you have bracken fern in your area?

The juice from the roots (especially the green ones) takes the sting out of Aussie ant bites.

Might be worth a try if you have bracken fern available in your area

Kind regards
Mick

That's good to know. Boy, just last week I was fishing on the lake in my Chaco sandals. We have several small fire-ant mounds, but they aren't too aggressive unless you purposely disturb them. Well, I was standing right on top of one and didn't realize it until a few dozen were on my one foot. These guys are good...I think they all get positioned and the leader signals a simultaneous stinging operation. Needless to say I had several small bits and they itched for a good week. It is worse when you're in the bush...the discomfort isn't life threatening, but it can keep you from getting a good night’s sleep, distract you and irritate you to the point of making hasty or ill-advised decisions. I wouldn’t want to tempt the chance of infection if scratched to the point of making open wounds. I heard you could use the Sawyer extractor to suck out the ant poison and lesson the effects, anybody ever do this?

I did a test...on camera...with that thing. Stung myself 12 times with honey bees and tested it on six of the stings in varying degrees of time between sting and treatment and it didn't do squat. Same amount of swelling and pain.

Does anyone know how a fireant bite actually works? Kinda neat, the defending critter pinches your skin in her mandibles, then brings her abdomen underneath to sting said pinched skin. I love popping the little fire ant pimples it forms afterwards.

Here is a really good write up on the ants:

Benadryl was formulated originally as a baby sitting aid. 2 oz. and the kids are out within a half an hour. This is the secret to good parenting!!!!

Well, the steroids I took for these bites last night kept me up until about 230AM. The bites are starting to ooze, from about three of them. My only concern is diabetes, the mention of ringworm sucks too.

+1 I find that the sting heals quicker if you pop the pimple as soon as it forms. It doesn't seem to go to the oozing/open sore stage.

Fire ants are no joke. The ones we have around here are little, but boy do they pack a punch. I had ONE sting me on my forearm last summer and my arm swelled up like a football- and it took over two weeks for the swelling to go away completely. I'd much rather be stung by a hornet. Bees hurt more, but the stings heal a lot faster.
