Anti-scale products?

I bought some PBC Anti-scale from you know who to try out. I found it to make a decent mess, and be somewhat more difficult to work with than I was hoping for. I am posting this in the hope we can have a discussion about how anti-scale products work, and what are the best anti-scale products out there.

I am under the impression that anti-scale products are only a material that can seal out oxygen, while not breaking down at high temps. Is this correct?
