If a shop tip is how to do something better, then this is an anti-shop tip. In other words don't do this! I was in the forge the other night and reached around for the slack tub ladle and with out looking dipped it in the open barrell of quenching oil! I came very close to damping the banked coal with hydraulic oil! that would have been a miserable smokey mess if not an explosion. So, I guess the real tip is COVER UP THE OIL, as I now do.

Fox Creek,
I don't consider that to be an anti-shop tip. That is just a reminder to keep your mind on what you are doing and that is one of the most important tips to remember.
Knifemaking is a very dangerous activity that can get out of hand real fast if you don't use the ol' noodle.

I sure am happy that nothing happened to you.

If a man can keep alert and imaginative, an error is a possibility, a chance at something new; to him, wandering and wondering are a part of the same process. He is most mistaken, most in error, whenever he quits exploring.

if you almost did that, you we're probably tired, take a break, and clean up around the shop. don't work when your tired, you do dumb things, and hurt yourself.

Fox,
I don't see that as an anti-shop tip. It is a real good tip. We need things to do and things not to do.
We've all been there - tired and needing to finish that knife. I try to reserve the less dangerous work for when I'm bushed.
Thanks for bringing it up.

did something like that once....reached for the h2o squirt bottle to cool down a blade i was soldering a guard on.....picked up my squirt bottle of wd40 instead....flaming sword....yikes...scared me to death.

Well, since we're on the topic...

Don't ever try to chuck a rat-tail file in your Dremel tool. Don't even think about it. I heard this from a friend of a friend

Don't casually hold anything in your hand while doing a "teensy" bit of work on a belt sander. Just about took the tip of a perfectly good Torx driver this way...

Before putting on that filter mask, check for spiders!

What not to do is a valuable tip.Full concentration is no less then we need for doing some things.I have found myself guilty of spacing out;not good.Pay attention boys!
