Seems like there is a whole slew out there. I need something for my home computer, PC, Windows XP. Is it worth buying Norton or downloading one of the free ones?

As always, any advice most appreciated!

I have been well pleased with AVG over the years, though some folks will contend that some other flavors of anti-virus software are better - especially some that you pay for.

There are probably some online rankings of effectiveness, which it might be useful to look into.

+1 on Avast

I went through a lot of different paid versions of anti-virus software. The free Avast works better than everything I've had.

Currently running free AVAST!, only because my Norton360 ran out, and I don't have the money at the moment to renew it.

both are great programs.

I'm been using AVG for years. Combined with a firewall (free Zone Alarm), it appears to be very effective.

I have been using AVAST on my business computer as well as my personal computer as my antivirus program. I like it because it has a small footprint, and plays very well with other programs. Almost zero performance hit.

Most importantly, it works seamlessly with my anti spyware program Spybot S&D. Both are free, and are updated frequently.

I don't even use anti-vi. I use superantispyware (amazing free program) and windows firewall. Never once have I had a virus problem. Just be smart with your internet activity and you'll be alright.

I too used AVG for many years with no problems. However, after downloading the latest version with a variety of new bells and whistles, I had terrible connection problems. It took forever to connect to websites, and then even longer to, for instance, load a reply or page within the website.
Got so bad I had my ISP check the connection....

Then I deleted AVG and things went back to normal.
Went to Avast and have had no problems since.

Apparently, the problem with AVG was with their new "web site checking" software.... They may have corrected it since.

Not trying to offend anyone !

AVG and Avast are terrible IMO. Mcafee is even worse.

Try Symantec Endpoint Protection. We use it extensivley at my work , our customers which are many and vast , I use it at home , we also use it at my second job on every PC in the office. The only AV that even comes close is Kaspersky.

Trust me , it works. With SEP and Malware Bytes , you will remain problem free.

Symantec is a virus itself, unless it's changed drastically in the past 5 years. Every time I put that on someone's computer they complained about it.

symantec/norton antivurus is the biggest memory hog i have ever seen when it comes to antivirus. i had it on a clean machine that was fast before installing it. after the install, the pc ran so slow it took forever for any program that required some memory to run or even start up. i rate it right up there with mcafee or avg which both are useless and have let me down. i have been running avast ever since its been out and wont go back to anything else.

I’ve been using Kaspersky for four or five months now and I like it a lot. It’s the only AV program that I’ve paid for, so YMMV. No viruses or trojans yet. I did get a false positive a couple of weeks ago where it automatically deleted a legit file, but it was easy to restore. Their support forums seem to be helpful too.

I used to use AVG free, but decided to switch after it let in two nasty viruses in as many months. I have the free version of Avast running on a laptop and I like it more than AVG. Malwarebytes is great and it works well with other AV programs.
