Antique Civil War era Nautical shipwreck bench. Crafted circa 1950
Truly one of a kind collectible art. Wood from this bench was salvaged from a Civil War era schooner shipwreck from a wooden schooner built in Tonowanda NY (near Niagara Falls) A real studio piece handcrafted from the Original Oak Planks and anchor chains from the found wreckage of the James D Sawyer, a wood schooner that met its untimely demise in the waters of Lake Michigan in 1880. She was lost in a massive storm when she broke away from her tug steamer and was driven ashore near Charlevoix Michigan. She was deemed a total loss, charted as a hazardous wreck and left to the elements. Some 70 years later in the late 1940s salvage began from the beach. These pieces are very rare, limited, highly sought after and are considered great nautical heirlooms. Absolutely gorgeous wood that has been worn and preserved in the waters of lake Michigan. The wood has depth and warmth that can only be found in antique water logged woods, beautiful grain quality and grain pattern,
These are investment pieces as some laws and legislation prohibit making furniture from historic relics.
Measures 37” x 9 1/2” x 13 1/2”
Recently another antique bench made from this same shipwreck sold at auction for over $9,500
