I am a little short on funds this month, otherwise I wouldn't be posting this. Bought this at an estate sale alongside several other pieces years ago, but this one has always been a favorite. I have used this one for form practice and test cutting in the past, so I know it is tough enough to use.
This is an antique Sinan Kapitan Bulong Pagay, an Ilocano traditional blade from Ilocos region in northern Luzon. You can still commonly see this sort of blade and hilt design in the region to this day.
Sinan Kapitan refers to the hilt design, which looks like a military officer, the hilt is made of carabao horn which is the material traditionally used among Ilocano knives/swords. The profile is called bulong pagay which is Ilocano for "rice leaf", it is the Ilocano counterpart of the dahong palay blade which is from Tagalog region in southern Luzon.
This short sword is traditionally wielded with a shield, though some modern practices see it dual wielded. Either way, the strikes are quick and tend to focus on the cut (as opposed to the thrust). Even at it's age, this one maintains a sharp cutting edge. At 24 inches in length, with an 18 inch cutting edge, warriors would use shield formations to close the distance before entering general skirmish patterns.
The blade has a few light scuffs, but is in otherwise great condition, especially for it's age. The steel is hardened and tempered High Carbon Steel, though the exact makeup of the steel is unknown (due to it's age).
