Hi,

Great collection! That horse head in the middle photo looks like it really got used! Though I like the one just to the right of it the best. The in-lay work looks just gorgeous.

Well, I cannot take credit. These are in the hands of a Finnish collector named Taisto Kuortti. He has made it his business to collect and preserve these. He has a website with even more pics. The whole thing is in Finnish but the pics are worth it...and where I got these pics. Oh to own just one of these...the topmost one I think with the birch bark washer handle.

thanks to hoosier Q since these are afringe area of which not much is known. finnish have a long long history of producing great blades.much of the better stuff is still hand forged & cuts up there with our super steels. however the good stuff is expensive [rightfully so]i always wondered where they got anything to burn in that country. my info shows it to be a land of snow & ice.

Forest is about the only resource we used to have until industrialisation, still have plenty and then some. Now metals were another thing, people had to make do with all kind of lousy bog iron in the really old days. Better iron and steel had to be imported until the industry got a proper start on our soil, late 18th-early 19th century.

frankti thanks for correcting me guess i was thinking of iceland. bog iron was a difficult source to work from. i know i'm right about the caribou being main food resource of the Finns & their historic triumph over the giant agressive russians.F inns are a very resolute & resourseful people.

That is correct. Which is also one extremely important reason why earlier war loot swords with superior steels were highly sought loot and worth of their weight in most valuable things of their era. Which is also reason why Finn's didn't disregard such sword they had gain from war loot even if it was broken if possible but they made puukko's from such swords if it was possible.

Main loot swords came from the east when occasionally defeating Novgorodian raiding parties and after broder skirmishes with the eastern tribes and novgorodians prior forming of Russian empire. Novgorodians thanks to their trading connections had better steels available for them.
