Antique store find!

Very interesting find. I've been thinking that considering you found the set in Texas, if the Tenth was the Buffalo Soldiers of the Tenth Cavalry, US Army, and not a British Army unit? OH

I also think it is, in all likelihood, a US regiment

Ernie - beautiful find. Where in Texas did you find it? That might also provide a clue as to the original owner.

One fact is that the 10th Cav left Texas in the spring of 1885 and was transferred to Arizona to help with the search for Geronimo. It was never stationed in Texas again, to my knowledge.

In the 1890s, the US Army had 10 regiments of cavalry and 25 regiments of infantry, so there are 2 possibilities.
Unless of course, the Tenth refers to a brigade rather than a regiment.

there are actually places for 2 pairs of scissors, but the larger top pair are missing...

Aaah, I didn't catch that. I'll keep an eye out too, but I'd guess Jack Black would have the best shot at filling that hole.

Really nice find!

The U.S. Army had both a 10th Regiment of Infantry and a 10th Regiment of Cavalry at that time frame (1895). I know of no military acronym for "GT" from that time frame, but those change often and can be lost. You might consider writing to the US Army History section and see if they can find someone with that name on the rolls.

Great group effort in some interesting detective work, it will be fun to see original owner eventually brought to light. At one time, Rodgers (and many other cutlery companies) produced just about as many different razors and scissors as they did knives. Enclosed are just a few of the dozens of various scissors that Rodgers offered in the late 19th century. The missing longer pair from the set should look quite like the ones in the upper left corner, basically a longer version of the short ones.

I have been hunting around for a pair of scissors to complete the set, but they are few and far between! Thanks for the military link...that will give me something constructive to do during down time at work tomorrow:)
The set was in Tomball, which is fairly close to Houston.

Dang, I bet it was in Nanny's Attik or Granny's Corner. I had planned on stopping in Tomball Friday PM, but I was late getting to Houston and we had TMS to do Saturday.. :( :D

I'll keep an eye out too, but I'd guess Jack Black would have the best shot at filling that hole. .

It could take a while to find a match, but Ernie is sending me the dimensions so I can unleash my hounds! :D

Very cool, and I'm happy to see it is a complete kit. Sets like that with 1 piece missing always make me wince.

I'm confused.

I can see why one would think the scissors in the case might not be original, as the inlet is longer.

I do not see anything that indicates there was a second pair of scissors. With the razors back in their inlets, there is only the imprint of the extant pair in the lining of the lid.

What am I missing?

If you look closely CNoyes , you will see that the ' cut out ' for the scissors is two deep . The small nail scissors fit the bottom 'cut out ' perfectly , whilst the top cut out is obviously empty .The secondary scissors would have been longer with pointier more 'egg' shaped handles ! Hope this helps ?
