I am trying to find the value of a pre 1836 W.S. Butcher Sheffield bowie knife. It is about 12 to 13 inches long with dark wood handles. Sheath is leather with metal tip and throat. Overall condition of knife is 65% to 70%. Tang stamp is pre 1836. I have seen an identical knife pictured in a hardbound book, but I do not remember which book it was. What is the value of this knife? Thanks, Buck Sullivan

Buck,

Welcome to the forums.

I would suggest we take this to the:

The Bernard Levine Knife Collecting and Identification Forum

Just hit General on the top bar and scroll down.

A knife is worth what someone else is willing to pay. And what someone is willing to pay will depend on how well you can document the authenticity of the knife.

Bowies have been faked for a long time. The tang marking should serve only as a starting point. There are way to many incorrectly marked knives on the market, and some of the well known older English stamps were actually purchased, after the original companies went out of business, and simply reused on more recently made knives.

It would help if you could post some pictures of the knife and sheath, and include closeup photos of any and all of the markings.
