Antler cleaning?

What is the proper way to clean/treat/prep an antler (elk in my case) or bone material for use in knife handle/scales? I only know of 2 types of cleaning, mechanical and chemical. I don't want to use anything that will cause decomposition (like suggested in the mineral oil thread).

Thanks,

Bob

I've read that Peroxide is the ticket on this one, but I haven't tried it yet. Whatever you do, don't get anything sour on bones, as it causes discoloration (happened to me).
