what kind of dye do most of you use to stain or antique antler to give it that sat in a smokey bar for fifty years look

The look you're after I've got by using Weaver Leather company dyes but all antler doesn't take the dye the same. I dye a lot of antler and bone and have had some repeatable success. Try Weaver Golden Oak oil stain its certainly not an exact science, good luck.

Fiebings dark brown spirit based leather dye. I got this advice from Russ Andrews. Check out the two stag peices with the Paul Long sheaths on my gallery page and you will get some idea what kind of colors you can get. The fun part is if you finish the stag up real fine, you don't have to do much to it after dying other than just polish it up. Rubbing it with a cloth will get you most of the way there.

Try potassium permanganate- looks very natural and dark. You can play with the colors by varying the amount of crystals you disolve in water.

Kiwi shoe polish - paint it on with a stiff brush - then melt it in with a small flame - bick lighter or bbq lighter.
If the piece is real rough, start with black for the low spots. Buff off the high spots and put brown on top. Tan will give a red-ish color and is a good look for the ends. Here's an example of just brown. The little support piece has a bit of tan on each end.

Good luck,
