I lucked into a 15" Salyan the other day in this DOTD: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=360308
It arrived Thursday but I wasn't able to pick it up until Friday.
You know me...if it's got a hamon, I want to see it. I did three etch/polish cycles with PCB etchant from Radio Shack.
I never was any good at taking photographs but the details are clear enough. Here's a closeup:
Interesting hamon on this one - it looks almost like two overlapping hamons rather than just one. I'd actually planned on just doing the etch and polishing it off later but it contrasts nicely with the inlay. It almost seems to glow. I like it.
The file tells me that it's skating-hard at the tip and almost as hard for the rest of the hardened zone. Very interesting.
Fit and finish were superb. While I'm of the school that pretty is as pretty does and I'm not bothered by laha spots, hammer marks and the like, this salyan seems to be a step above the usual. The lines are straight, there are no gaps, everything is very nearly perfect. Bura knows how to beat some steel.
It's almost a shame that these look so nice because this one is a good usable size and feels excellent in the hand. Too nice to use but too handy not to - what's a guy to do?
Keep an eye out for these. They're worth it. Me likey.
