Quick one for you guys- What is the most effective (or inventive) way that you have heard or used to remove antler crowns from the skull? I have a few moose, deer and musk ox skulls and want the nice pattern you get with the crown. Or does it have to fall off naturally?

Thanks all!

you can just cut it off but if your looking for that little bowl on the bottom of the crown the only way to do that is through nature and I don't think musk ox have antler that is horn which (fun fact) is basically compressed hair

I just cut the skull in half with a hacksaw or on a band saw then slowly start working my way down to the crown. When you get down to just the bone around the base of the crown sand it to the shape you want and then you can buff it to a high gloss.

Shed antlers have a rough texture to that dome under the crown. If it is smooth it is most likely not a shed.

Like hevyev said, that musk ox should be horn and not antler. I assume musk ox is like other bovine and the horn is actually a sheath over a core and when it comes off you will have a hollow horn. Like a cow horn used for powder horns.

Use a saw to cut them off then you can use a dremel tool and stipple the crown to resemble a dropped antler.

I have a REALLY SUPER NEAT WONDERFUL way to take Muskox horns from the skull, but it's very detailed.... It would be easier if you were to invite me on a Muskox hunt and then I could simply show you!:D:D

Yes, yes, yes.... the MO is a horn not an antler, smartaxx's:D. I was looking for the natural look, so I guess I'll just have to try to fake it.
Sorry Matt- the horns I got were from already killed animals when I lived in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Too expensive to get a MO otherwise (some Americans pay $10000-15000 for the hunt there). The goats sure taste good though (fun fact is MO are goats closely related to Mountain goats).
Thanks guys
