Out of curiosity, how does antler respond to branding? As much as I admire your work here, I would love one with a branded rune or symbol I think.

Burning antler STINKS to high heaven and beyond. You can use a wood burner if you like, but for now I will steer clear of it;)

Cool!

Not too keen on the finish though...it looks a bit plasticy.

Burning bone?! :barf:

I like the glossy finish personally. It looks preserved and rugged. Using firesteel rods that thick makes for thin walls on the antler when mounting them. Once and a while they can get just enough moisture expansion to split (learned it the hard way). Then the whole handle is useless, as you can pull the steel out. I go to extra lengths to ensure mine antler steels are sealed for good.

I give them a Danish Oil soak, then a complete dry. After that 5 or more spray on coats of shellac. Moisture and cracking should never be an issue after that:D

And yes burning bone or antler is almost a puking process. I for one would rather just avoid it altogether hahaha.

I hear ya bro.

It can be a pain to seal antler. I usually use copious coats of superglue, rubbed in with a piece of cling film (saran wrap) over my finger. I like to buff the stuff back with some 0000 gauge wire wool to give a nice muted finish.

Infact...I think I need to do this with my new puukko. A satin finish is much nicer to fondle....like a well shaved leg! lol!

Knocked this little thing up. The firesteel looked like it could have done well with some pants.

8oz leather
Dark Mahogony stain
two coats of super sheen flexible acrylic finish
