Got a nice Peter Wright anvil and HEAVY base made from 1/2 and 1/4 plate. It's awesome except that the anvil is welded to the base and rather than a nice ring I get a clunk from the base.I am considering.
-Laying automotive soundproofing into the base.
-Cutting the anvil free and mounting it to a log or fabricated wooden base.
-Cutting the anvil free and try mounting some plywood between the anvil and base.

Open to suggestions as well.

Most people try to stop their anvils from ringing.. It tends to get on your nerves and eardrums after a while...

The "ring" is a beautiful sound. The same sound my M-14 makes, coincidence?,I think not :D.Besides the ring is preferable to the loud "clunk" i'm getting now and I can always try the magnet trick on the anvil.Didn't work on the base.

Sand gives you 100% compaction if it is tamped when whet. I have two anvils set in a "sandbox" base; a wooden box with thin rubber on the bottom and then filled with sand and tamped. Makes for a very solid anvil set up.

Construction adhesive, (Liquid Nails) will really hold the anvil in place and will deaden the ring better than anything I have tried. Just make sure you have the anvil set the way you want it before you anchor it. Fred's advice with the sand box works great.

So I guess the consensus is to cut it free and remount it.I saw a base once made out of railroad timbers with a hollowed top with sand for the anvil to sit in that looked slick.I'm sure i'll find a use for the old base. Here's a pic of my girl, her name is Elizabeth :D.
