I've been lurking here for awhile and I've been looking through some old threads, but I can't seem to find anyone with the same "predicament" that I'm having.

I recently bought a round piece of 4340. It was 8.5" in diameter and 6" thick or so I thought. After paying for it, the seller contacted me and said that the 6" wasn't available, but he had 2 pieces that were approximately 4.5" that he'd give me for the same price, since there was a mix up. I thought this was a good deal, since now I have a little over 9" once I stack them up.

My question is about the stacking. Should I have them welded together? The seller said they were annealed. Would it be alright to just build a stand for them and just have one sitting on top of the other?

I've included a pic of the two pieces and I really appreciate any input.

I'm slowly getting my shop up after waiting many years to pull the trigger.

I look forward to sharing pictures of my future work!

Yeah, they are really heavy and I believe that is the weight for each piece. I haven't weighed them yet, but picking them up at the post office, I could tell they were hefty pieces.

I thought that a single piece would be better, which is why I wanted the 6" piece.

Would letting one piece sit on top of the other work?

Thanks for your response!

I think you have two anvils, there. You may actually lose rebound if you stack them.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I know that people will weld steel plates on top of an anvil to "reface" it, but I wasn't sure how the stacking would work.

Thanks again for the responses.

I think I'll build me a stand for for the larger one and figure out what to do with the other one. I may try a stack and then just go from there.

The hardness of your steel is @ HRc 35. Typical anvils will have a face hardness @ 48-56 HRc. So your steel is a little soft for working steel. The face is going to get marked up in short order.
