I have an old anvil that was my dads, and it is very badly worn, edges rounded off and the center is hollowed out a quite a bit. I am not a forge guy, but want to try it someday and it would seem that the anvil should be flat. Is there anyway to rebuild it? either by building it up with weld or welding a plate, maybe T-1, to the top of it? I do have alot of welding experince in heavy equipment repair and buildup. Can this be done, or would it just ruin the anvil? Thanks to all who reply. J.D.

If you work in the welding field, you may be able achieve it.

I would consult with the best welders you can find in your area.
Maybe you work with some real experts.
(beer money goes a long way...)

With the proper hardfacing tool steel rods and appropriate preheat, it can be done.

There are some professional welders on line here that can give you much more detail.

I think the way you restore an anvil is send it out to be blanchard-ground. (i.e. you grind down the high spots, not fill in the low spots). So I've been told.
