I found a slightly abused anvil which has some life and is better then what I have now (nothing). The anvil has a star on one side and I was wondering if anybody knew who manufactured these? The face looks like it has gone through some use and actualy looks as though it had some work done, it has one leg broken off but can be secured.

Thanks, the anvilhunt goes on! I found a man who has collected about 200 anvils ranging from PR's to old bridge anvils. He has an amazing collection but is unwilling to sell me any of them!:(

i think its sad that people collect anvils. then there are will be none left for people that auctley need them.

Does it look like the star anvil listed on this page? There is a link to a picture...

I looked at a star anvil recently and decided against it. From my research, I found that there were a few companies that made anvils under the name "star." American Star anvils had different levels of quality, and a lot of them were sold at hardware stores in the early 20th century for farmers who needed the occasional anvil to pound on. The one I looked at appeared to be cast iron and of poor quality. Yet, some star anvils are nearly as old as the good ol' USA.

There were also different types of star logos: five and six pointed stars. I believe the six pointed star logo is from the civil war era, but I'm not 100% positive of that.

Checking the rebound will be a good indicator of whether it's a cheap star anvil, or not.

It's not much info, but I hope it helps. There are many anvil experts on here that can help you out.

It has wear and some issues but for $65 I think I'll get it. After all it beats what I have at the moment (nothing).

I'm still interested in finding more out about Star. It sounds as though American Star was sold which was when they started making anvils with the six points?
