I just picked up an anvil on E-bay. It weighs #158, is 10.5 in tall, 25"in long, 10" horn, face is 15x4&5/8, 7/8 HH, 3/4 ph, 3 mouse holes (one on the bottom and one on each end) has a #6 on the lower front and a x on each foot. It appears to be forge welded out of several peices of steel. Any Idea on the maker or age?? I was not told during the auction but the anvil is cracked about 2 in forward of the HH, the crack is 2 1/2 in long and on both sides of the anvil (original forge weld seperating?) Should I weld this ?? The anvil has decent R&R, I read on this forum that the best rod is stoody 2110 & 1105 is this correct?/ thanks for any imput..Louis

Rocketmann, you can weld on an anvil but there are alot of variables.it depends on the type of anvil mostly.stoody hardfacing rods will work well for the job but if you are stick welding you will need to pre heat to about 400 degrees and then stress relieve and slow cool
you can get a work hardning flux core wire which will take alot of amperage plus the wire isnt cheap. My welding supply house quoted me 185.00 for a 25# roll, which is fine if you can make money welding anvils but exceeds the cost of mine and probably most hobby guys too.
Ripper has a good site with some really helpful links

Happy welding :)

vilimas, I went to abco and they sold me MG 600 ($40 pound). 1/8. I preheated to 400 and welded 1 pass. looked like shite full of porosity and slag. grounded it all out and welded w/ 3/32 7018 looked a lot better. the base metal acted like cast iron when I welded it  I think the weld should hold for a while. I'm pretty sure that the crack went all the way thru. I ground out a bevel 3/4 in deep on both sides & filled them in. Just did the iron worker way and used a lot of heat:cool: I won't be happy if it falls apart..

 i hate mystery steel!! I wanted to repair my 100 #er its cast steel so it should weld ok,but i figured with the time and expense i'd leave it alone, after all i dont think i'm good enough to worry about a perfect anvil surface just yet.:o keep waiting i looked for 3 months then paid 200.00 for a decent anvil....today a friend at work invited me up to pick from the 6 anvils he has.so now i have a line on a 300 lb fisher :D :D.It seems anvils are a dime a dozen yet one in a million.
