i putting together my anvil and this is what im thinking. i have a block of mild steel 4.5 x 5.5 x 24" and i have a round of S7 thats 6.5" accross and 4" tall. i was going to have the S7 hardened and welded onto the end of the mild steel. then weld a 1/4" thick disk to the other end and stand it up. that would give me a height of 28.25" to anvil face. is that tall enought and a good idea?

it should be tall enough so that when you stand next to it with a hammer in hand and arm hanging at your side your knuckles are resting on the face of the anvil. give or take. i prefer mine an inch or two taller because i like being a little closer to my work. one bad bad habbit i have is to hunch my back over and get really close to my work. i should get my eyes checked probably. i think its easier to focus on the work when im hunched closer. i digress.

well it looks like when i stand next to it its just perfect. it will weigh around 230 pounds when done. i was thinking using a 1/2" x 15" disk. then i can role it outside.

sounds like a nice set up to me. and you can always set it up on a piece of wood or something to adjust it. i have seen similar set ups using large square tube for the body going down to the floor plate and a hardened chunk of whatever on top. the coolest thing was it was filled with sand and welded shut, so it didnt ring. nice thumping ping sound when it was hammered on. post pics! :)
