Anvil shopping

Happycat: If you happen to be looking and find me a good deal, tell me please. For the next 9mo or so I'm living in Germany so no smithing for me, if i happen to find an anvil over here, i don't know how I'd get it home anyway.

Before my excursion to Germany, I called North Georgia my home. Not sure where I would go around there to get an anvil. I have found 2 at an antique shop, one was the damn bloody anvil I'm trying to uprgade from. Then there was the 125# that was sold not ten minutes upon my arrrival....ugh. Other than those two, I've got nothing.

oh and HAHAHAHAHA to the "disposable income"....psh, I'm 18 and starting college, no monies for me

An anvil is an investment, and well worth buying right the first time and never worrying about again for the rest of your life. Also, if you only intend to forge blades, and nothing else, you can get away with much less in tems of 'features' than a general blacksmith.

For example, these two anvils are in my shop

in addition to my main shop anvil

and both of the 'broken' anvils are perfectly good for forging knives, and far far better than any grizzly anvil or harbor fright anvil.

The one with the conical nose is mid 1700s colonial, and was probably used for 100 years even without the heel, the other is early 1800s just missing the horn but the faces on these anvils are perfeclty fine, hardened steel, and very usable.

Just keep the faith and keep looking. Regularly trolling craigslist I got a 130# 1908 fisher in great condition for only 90 bucks!

Yeah, so far I like that craiglist thing. I've found that $300 drill press i needed to make my guitar for $100. My forehead is uber red right now, you have no idea.

Call yer local auctioeers and let them know you are on the hunt for an anvil. Ask them to keep you updated when they come up at different sales.

I put up a looking for post in the tool section on craigslist and got several replies. Got a good deal on a 170lb. Mousehole in good shape.

Thanks Burt, I'll do that. I've got a "local" (back home in the US) auctioneer that my grandmother gets good deals from all the time. I've just sent her an email asking her to ask him to hold any "good condition" anvil of 150# or more. hope that'll work
