Hi Folks,

I've forged a dozen and a half knives on my fabricated railroad track anvil. I'm now in a position to purchase a new anvil, recommendations on price, style, and preferences would be very helpful.

Thanks for your advice,

Bob

Bob,

Personally, I love my EuroAnvil. I've got the 335lb model and it's fantastic. I've also worked with several of the 175lb version and provided that they're on a good base (which is true of any anvil) they're a darned fine tool. In addition to that John at Blacksmith Supply is a great guy to work with and manages to get great shipping rates. They're definitely worth a look-see.

I've been forging for about 6 years on a 175 lb Fisher, and love it. It doesn't ring like a bell when you hit it.

Thanks for the suggestions; d and Ray. d, how are the EuroAnvils made, forged or cast? Ray, I was unable to find the Fisher anvil site on the web. Are they still manufacturing these?

Thanks Again,

Bob

I don't believe the Fishers are in current production, so you may have an easier time finding the euro anvil that Rob recommends. Mine had seen it's better days Long before I got it, ( tip of horn broken off, edges chipped ) but after smoothing out a few rough spots, I've been very satisfied.

As far as I know, the only forged blacksmiths' style anvils available new are Peddinghaus. Nimba and Euroanvils are cast steel.

Now, there's very little to say against the cast anvils- the Nimbas are supposedly very good quality, with excellent hardness, ring and rebound.

But, if I were to get a new anvil (I have a pre-1910 Peter Wright at the moment) I'd probably invest in a forged 165-lb Peddinghaus.

I checked out those previous threads Mike; lots of useful information. In my initial searches I've come across Peddinghaus, Nimba, and Euroanvils. Thanks for your personal preference on the 165 Peddinghaus. I'll be heading down to Texarkana in late April to take the ABS "Introduction to Bladesmithing" class. While down there I'll be quizing the heck out of the Instructors about anvils and the like.

Thanks,

Bob
