I've been looking for an anvil for knife, buckle, and general black smithing for a while know. Right now I have some mild steel nailed to a stump so it a les then ideal forging situation.

Any suggestions on anvils?
What weight?
What style?
What brand?
Wher to find them cheap?
What to look for when buying used?

I know almost nothing about shopping for anvils or what type is nessisary so any information is good information at this point.
Thanks, Mitch

And I've got about 9 inches of railroad rail. Any way to grind that flat in the mean time? And any other helpful rail mods you have come across would be great.

Thanks again, Mitch

Hey Mitch,
I have heard of a few people getting lucky and finding an anvil at a scrap yard for really good prices., One friend got a nice one maybe 120-130 lb for $50. Just from my looking around, they are hard to come by. When you do find them, they can sell for $2-$4 a pound. Stay away from cast iron anvils (commonly called ASO, anvil shaped object) Keep looking around. I keep asking wherever I go. Even houses with yards that look look like a junk yard. If someone is around, I'll ask. Just don't insult them saying it looks like a junk yard lol.

For your piece of railroad track, check out this thread. Some good info about RR track anvils.
Good luck.

Search for post anvils on here, its another option that many 'smiths use. A 16# sledge head cast in cement into a chicken feeder is cheap and easy.
