Hi im just starting out with knife making and was wondering where i could buy an anvil from and what size would suit the needs of a knife maker?

Hi tuesday, do you have any old railroad tracks no longer in use? A piece of track makes a very good anvil, especially for someone starting out.

Try www.kmts.co.za they have some anvils. If they cant help i am sure they can point you in the right direction. Owner is Johan Oosthuizen, very nice guy.

Good luck

Hi Tuesday and welcome to BF.:)

You could also contact Kevin Harvey at www.heavinforge.co.za
Kevin is the only ABS Master Smith in SA. A really top bloke and I am sure he will point you in the right direction.

What part of SA are you in?

Have a look at www.kgsa.co.za under guild members you will find contact information of many of the members and some also do supplys. Herbst is one such knifemaker that also has machines etc.

Hi Tuesday,

Welcome to BF. I hope you enjoy this place.

Some great thoughts so far. I am going to move this to the makers forum in hopes for more good ideas.

Many tribal smiths in rural Asia simply use a large flat rock. I've never tried it, but people were using them long before anvils. Give it a try, it might get you by until you can find exactly what you're looking for. If nothing else, you can atleast say you made a knife with a rock!

Hi Tuesday, Try Adendorf tools. They look like cast iron anvils to me but I am not sure. They are in Jo burg, the Vaal triangle and a few major towns.Enjoy !
