Im scared I will screw up my knives..I havent ever sharpened my spydies before. they have been sent in or sharpened by others. Is it very hard to use and get the hang of? on PE or CE or SE? And can you sharpen any brand on it? benchmades, RATs..? lol
Any and all info appreciated. Ive wanted one for some time now but I always just buy a new knife instead because of this doubt I have! :p oops

They're easy to use.

Watch the video that comes with it.

Find some old cheap kitchen knives and practice on them for a while till you get the hang of it.

It is very easy to use and it comes with a instructional dvd.You can use it to sharpen anything sharp or any brand.

You do have to watch the instructional DVD that comes with it.

There are some great YouTube presentations as well.

And you do have to get the hang of it - for instance, if you just pull out the SharpMaker and start sharpening, you'll most likely blunt the tip of your knife.

(I second the suggestion that you practice on some old kitchen knives first.)

With all that said, it's one of the best sharpening devices out there, and IMO it's clearly worth learning to use it
rather than buying a new knife every time the one you have becomes dull!

Do you have any SAKs or other decent steeled knives? The old kitchen knife is fine, but if it is inferior steel, this practice might not be that pleasant. Also use the sharpie/magic marker on the edge trick so you can see where you are sharpening.

I often lean a diamond stone against the SM rod to reprofile or to set the edge, before starting on the brown stones. That'll save you 30 minutes of constant swiping.

Once you get the hang of it, and setting up your edges, you'll enjoy it immensely.

The sharpmaker is very easy to learn on, capable of putting outstanding edges on any knife with some practice, and in my experience is by far the least likely to mess up your knives with. You may slightly round an tip by letting it slide off a stone, but other than that I can't think of much you can do to screw up a knife with it.

The Sharpmaker is "Good", I used it about 10-15 times in just 2 months. It

puts a decently sharp edge on a knife, but (In my experinces) never sharper

than it came from the factory. :thumbdn:

I don't have the Diamond or Ultra Fine stones, so i won't know how good it'll

help, but I ain't going to spend extra $$$ for those replacement

stones. :thumbdn:

The sharpmaker is a no-brainer. Just take things slowly at first, and be sure to watch the video. Sal will show how to sharpen the unsharpenable!

A few things to remember;

If you're not careful, it's very easy to round off the tip of a knife with the sharpmaker. Nothing drastic, but you can lose that needle-fine factory tip in a hurry. Take care at the end of your stroke.

Clean the stones frequently. Stones that are clogged up with metal don't work well at all (in my experience.)

alright thanks everyone! bit of a confidence booster!:)

And yes Ive got a couple of SAKs and a couple old gerber and kershaws that will work great to screw around with:p Tips are messed up on at least one of em already! What was I thinking starting off silly and young w/ a different brand than spyderco??:D

it is very easy to use... there is a 30 minute video that comes with it that walks you through how to sharpen every blade you can imagine step by step... it shows CE, PE, and SE so dont worry about that... definitely practice on an old kitchen knife first but i luv mine...

I cleaned my stones after i use them everytime, but for some reason the

metal doesn't come off my "Fine" stones.

I use the cleanser and one of those green things, but it wont work. :grumpy:

Any Ideas?

This is the ultimate SM rod cleanser.
Works like a charm.
