Now that I've got my first 119, I'm wondering about the wisdom of picking up a 120 to keep it company. I know that they are very similar, but are they too much alike to warrant having both? Any preferences from those of you who have both models?

I have a 119 and a 120 and both are really nice knives. I didn’t get them as my primary hunting knives mainly because I don’t need a hunting knife that big. A 117 small special at 4.5 inches is a good all around size for small/medium to big game hunting afield in this part of the world. I suppose the extra large game in Alaska like brown bear and moose they might be better suited but I haven’t hunted up there yet so I can’t validate that.
Mainly I got the larger knives for in camp butchering and slicing cuts of meat even at home in the kitchen they are so nice to use.
I guess if I went pig hunting and needed to stick a pig they’d come in handy but around here there aren’t any wild piggies. Lol.
I don’t know for sure but I think they were first designed as a fighting knife back in WW I and II. And probably excelled in that regard.

Yes there are 120 fans out there.

I like the 120 and find it's size useful. Especially when boning & quartering large game. i.e. elk, hogs and mule deer. It can double up as a large fruit knife in the kitchen or carving a ham or turkey at those occasions. (should you not have over a 7" knife in your kitchen set.) DM

Here's what happened to me. Started looking for used 119 and 120 at low prices on various auction sites. Ended up with 6 or more of each in various conditions. Took the worst ones and sharpened them up to use as throwing knives. Blasphemy yes, but a good hard use test. Had an old refrigerator that turned into a throwing target upon it's demise. None of the Buck knives snapped. They punched nice holes through the outer skin and into the insulation. They performed just as well as my Cold Steel throwers and my old S&W 440c Bullseye throwers. While they are larger than needed for most game purposes they will absolutely handle any chores as a camp knife.

Do you prefer one size over the other?

just a thought, why not carry and use the 119 for a bit see if ya use the length of blade a little or a lot of not at all. then y'all know better if ya will want a 120 for using. unless ya just want it cause....nothing wrong with that either.

Big 120 fan. Heck of a knife. I think I might have even used this one to carve up the bird last thanksgiving. It’s a great knife.
That said, the 119 is no slouch and I doubt you’ll ever feel like you need more blade when using it.
