Any $350-$400 knife suggestions?

IMO take a look at the Spyderco Sage 2. I've owned one for quite some months and get complements on it just about every time that I use it. You should be able to pick one up for approx $170.00 and I like the previous forum members idea about saving some of your cash on the front end so you can use the rest for beer or books. Good luck w/ all your future academic pursuits.

By the way if you're in NYC I suggest getting something with removable thumbstuds so that the knife won't be confiscated as a "flick knife".

Definitely get a sebenza. Premium blade steel, very easy to break down and clean, lifetime warranty and spa treatment, endless assortment of inlay or CGG options (I recommend carbon fiber or micarta) , inclusion of wrench(es), lube and polishing cloth, and to top it off — resale value. If it doesn't get you the jollies you thought it would than turn around and sell it here for almost no loss at all.

Almost forgot — Insingo or Normal blade shape?

You can't lose with the Sebenza, and there's a good chance you'll find yourself winning once you've got one.

I think that I'd agree with this guy...Neffarious

I disagree about the Sebenza. Its ok but there are plenty of other knives in that range that are as nice. As a freshmen in college, get a cheaper knife and use the remainder for something else I have had sebenzas and other brands as well, they are nice, but not needed by any means. As a college freshmen $400 is a chunk to spend on a knife regardless of anything fora student. Spend a c note at most and save the rest, you'll have a better time

My grandson is just graduating from college, and I gave him a Spyderco Techno...a heavy-duty folder that will hold a sharp edge, but only about 2.5" blade. I showed him various folders to pick from, including sprint Spyderco PM2's, Spyderco Caly models, Sebenza and several Spyderco Sage models. These are all available for $150 or so, except for the Sebenza. You'll never notice the difference for casual needs, and can later reward yourself with a Sebbie as a grad gift to yourself... :)
Note that many colleges will have specific restrictions on what you can carry with you, including blade length. You will have the best chance of "acceptance" if you have a blade that is 3" or less, plus you won't scare the girls so badly in your classes.
This recent thread would also be helpful for you to read.
And "google" your college's Weapons Policy to check out folding knife restrictions... In some colleges, you cannot carry ANY knife at all, but many will have a 3" blade-length restriction. Some just specify that a "common folding knife" is okay.

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. I have some money saved up just in case of an emergency or whatever since I am in College. I was set on a higher end knife since I already have a pm2 and a zt 0770cf that I love so much. Looks like I might have to go with the sebenza from all the suggestions. Probs will go for the large black micarta like those the best.

I bought a Heckler & Koch USp40 my freshman year in college. I still have it and don't regret spending the 700 bucks or whatever it was. Go big if you can, you'll end up spending your money on beer or something if you don't " invest" in a $400 blade.
I agree with the Sebenza. You won't regret it.

For a production knife I'd recommend a Spyderco Southard. for $220 you can't beat it. For a semi custom tactical knife for EDC at $300 is a Grayman Dua

Especially if you live on campus or a room mate situation.
Spend about $100.00 on a nice knife. Since it may get stolen or lost in your wild youth!;) anyways.

Put the rest of the money in good old US savings bonds and after you have graduated, got a real job say in 5-10 years then take that money out of the bonds and buy something sweet for yourself. Or not? Leave it there until you find the knife of your dreams!

I would like to vote for the Sebenza also. I'm a sophomore in college, bought 4 sebs this year, along with the zt562, 562cf and some others. Can't go wrong with any of them.

You are in college and really should be financial when purchasing a knife---you are going to have unexpected cash emergencies down the road.

You should buy a Grayman Dua and put the rest toward things like bail and probation fees.

fwiw- I love the Sebenza but I don't carry one. I used to tho.
Do you NEED an expensive folder or WANT one?
I have lots of nice folders but my Bucklite goes with me everyday. Put that extra cash in your pocket.

when i hear 400$ first thing i ll think about is a sebenza or a strider sng

although i dont have one of those

since you already have a pm and a zt you should get yourself a sebenza imo... but dont listen to me - i am a irresponsible knife and gear addict who would constantly over-spend on higher end stuff :D

a sebenza with micarta is probably what i will give my father for his next birthday

The 4" limitation is a NYC thing. If you're in NYC then pretty much any modern one hand opening knife that can lock would be confiscated and give you problems if you get stopped by the police. If this is the case, then you're honestly better off getting a SAK with a bottle opener or going traditional like these made by GEC in 1095 http://www.collectorknives.net/great-eastern-cutlery-radio-crown-lifter/

If you're not in NYC then you're probably still better off getting a SAK or trad with bottle opener. Don't get me wrong, I love my CRKs but a SAK is probably your best bet. Inexpensive, immensely useful, universally acknowledged as a non-weapon (did you check your college's rules?), and easily replaced if lost. Besides, everyone should have at least one SAK!

In that price range there are a lot of good knives. The Seb is a great blade, no complaints. You may want to look at the Three Sisters Forge Beast, or the gramen dua. Happy hunting a lot of great folders are available in that range.
