Any advice for beginning knife making?

I have a file that I will be grinding into an Arkansas toothpick tomorrow. I heated it up to red hot already to take away the hardness. In the morning, I will saw out the basic shape and take it to a grindstone. Any suggestions for me at all? Anything helps.
