Any Advice On Packing My Knife For Air Travel?

I think that taking the knife apart and keeping the handle in your carry on and the blade in the check in would be a pretty good idea.

I had my stuff taken on a flight from California once and I have vowed never to pack anything that I truly would miss. So my Sebs stay at home when I go on the road and I take a Blur with me in my luggage.

That seems the route to take. I actually bought a spare blur on sale at WalMart for that very reason.

When I go to Flordia for vaction, I send my knives by priority mail to the motel, I am stay. I called the manager and told him, I would have a package arriving. Everyting worked out fine. He sured grinned when he handed me the package.

Pack your knife deep inside your clothing. Use a sturdy suitcase with a good lock. If security must search your luggage you will be called down to unlock it and then be present while they do their security screening.

Just a personal story regarding this....

I locked a suitcase with its built-in comination lock on a return flight from Tacoma to Houston, just like I'd done hundreds of times before. When I got to Houston, the whole lock panel was ripped off the bag, the zippers were broken off, and what was left of the zippers wouldn't hold the bag closed. There was duct tape wrapped around it keeping my stuff in. When I cut the tape and looked inside, I found a small note informing me that the TSA had inspected my luggage. Nothing inside my bag had been moved or "inspected" in the least. There were some tools, a Pacific Salt, a Large Sebbie, and some prescription pills inside. Plenty of things to look at, anyway, and all they did was destroy a $200 bag so they could open it slightly and throw in a note. Their response to my anger was that I should have used a TSA approved lock, and since I didn't all bets were off.

Anyway, they WILL open your bag, destroying it if necessary.
They WILL NOT inform you in any way.

They CAN bite my butt for tearing up my nice bag. :grumpy:

Also - USE those little tie-down straps in your bag. They really work.

It amazes me, people still get that weird look on their faces when they are told you can't bring that knife on the plane. Then the look of horror when they are told either throw it away or your not getting on the plane.

Listen to TOm Krien. I do the same and have my luggage inspected while I watch. I have it sealed and locked. Good luck.

I am in the Army and also a knife freak as you all are. I travel a lot on civilian flights. Quick story;

On my recent redeployment my team and I had to fly civilian airlines for a bit. We had all our gear including weapons, the weapons wer checked in and were fine. One of my duffels contained a lot of blades, I was called in by TSA and they needed my key, they would not allow me to be present for the inspection, i was in uniform and demanded to be present and that still did not get me anywhere. To make a long story short, everything went well and nothing was taken.

I do know it is not illegal to take blades as long as they are in checked in baggae. I would just ensure like everyone has already said that you lock up your bag, it wont prevent an inspection, but may help some. Additionally I would keep the knife in a leather pouch or something and yes put it in a pocket or a smaller bag, like shaving bag or something. There is no hiding it from the xray, it will stick out like a sore thumb, but the TSA people are used to this. Good luck with your trip!!!!!!!!!!

I just got back from a trip to Florida and simply placed both my Strider PT and SAK in my luggage. I placed my SAK in my shaving bag, while I placed the PT in a zippered compartment on the bottom of the suitcase. No problems. Mind you, it was direct flight, so there were fewer hands handling the bags. A little stressful, but all was fine. In the future, I might consider taking the knife apart, but time will tell.

Lot's of Airport Security horror stories. I still send my Kershaw Blur in my baggage and if it gets ripped off it sure hurts less than having one of my Sebbies stolen by security. I do mean stolen, too. I had my bag ripped open between California and Vancouver BC and my CD Wallet was taken. Nice of them to put a note in my baggage letting me know my baggage was opened.

Enjoy the music ...........

hey, I have seen some posts on how to pack a knife for air travel, my problem is that TSA (which i call) To Steal Anything isn't a very reliable organization!! Twice in the last 4 years I have traveled by Airlines, the first TSA left my suitcase unlocked, When I asked what happen they informed me that they didn't do it.. Yeah right!!

the second time (last April) TSA stole my lock altogether.. and my suit case was opened

know I want to pack my Survival Knifes (both for me and my son) and other gear for Death Valley but I don't Trust TSA at all, the airlines tell me that if I pack it in my suit case nothing will happen, But with TSA involved, it will probably be stolen!!

One way is to take a photo with my Iphone prior to departure. that way I can complain to TSA about it, but when I go onto the website, thier isn't a contact page?? is their a travel safe that you could put into your suitcase (see thru) that i can chain it inside?

thanks

I had a similar dilemma last summer with my umnum I just put it in a sock and put that sock in another and rolled it into a ball

I' ve flown a lot, never had anything taken. My luggage has been search a lot, they leave you a letter telling you they searched your bags. Bottom line you don't want to loose your Sebbie LEAVE IT HOME and take a less valuable knife. Then you won't get it stolen. Good Luck

Have them inspect it in front of you then put your own locks on it. Also, don't skimp money on locks. A $5, $10, or $20 "Master" lock is a piece of junk and should be avoided like the plague.

Do not use the TSA locks. They are inherently vulnerable because of the ability to bypass them. There are ways of open them up without the the correct TSA key or combination.

Not sure when the last time was that you traveled in the US, but that's not how it works with the TSA now. They can and will open your luggage at any time during the screening process, and simply leave a note inside it alerting you that it was checked. That's why all new travel locks have a TSA code on the bottom, so they know what master key to use to unlock it.

Mail it to you at yourself at your destination. Print off the return postage and pack a flat rate box before you leave and mail it back home. I used to fly out of ATL a lot and thats what I would do since they have a post office in the airport. I was usually at my destination for a week or so and it would arrive at the hotel next day or 2 days. Sometimes my company would mail stuff to my destination before me, and I would just drop my package in there to be included, and it would be waiting on me in my hotel room.

Odds of theft are too high. Either buy a Delica when you get there or if you must take the Seb with you send it overnight to your destination and back home before you leave. YMMV...

Just returned from my 21st trip to Tokyo. Have had my Sebenza on nearly every trip via Scott Dog's method. Works well.

Usually if I am going to go on a trip of some sort I usually take things of little or no sentimental value to me incase if I lose them or some bs incident happens where my stuff gets taken or stolen(damn cleaning ladies:mad:)...

One more for Separating the blade from the scales.

It is the best bet, you can wrap the blade in something to protect the edge and just pack it in with your shaving gear. Keep the scales somewhere else.

I'm flying up to the Gold Coast in a few weeks for some R&R on the beach so will test it out.

I hate the thought of not having my sebbie with me when I go away :D

The airport guys in Aus are just as stupid and bloody minded as your guys, they all must check their brain / common sense in at the front door when they clock on for work
