Just wondering if anyone knows if spyderco has any assisted opening knives in the works? Like some of the kershaws and buck but spyderco has the best knife designs IMO

Spyderhole is all the "assist" I want or need. 100% reliable, no moving parts, no unnecessary complexity.

I couldn't see a spring assist working well with the spyder hole just because it seems to lock your thumb in where a thumb stud your thumb is just behind it. Sure they could do one with a flipper but I don't think it would really fit the style of a Spyderco.
Like the Deacon said most Spyderco's come out plenty fast with just a thumb flick I don't think there is any need for a assisted one.

Hopefully not. The beauty of spydies is the simplicity of the design. 100% pure function.

AO = 1 more thing to go wrong.

If you need fast and easy opening, get a Spydie with a wave feature. ;)

Sal has stated here on BFC that he has no interest in making assisted openers. I'm fine with that---there's room in the market for Kershaw to make them for people who want AO. After all, Kershaw did put AO on the map.

I'm not a fan of AOs, but there's plenty of them out there for people who do like them.

When I think about Spyderco and what makes me love their knives so much, the first thing that comes to mind is simplicity. They're not complicated mechanisms. They work so well and last so long because they're so simple. Moving parts are what fails first and aside from a spring here and there, Spyderco doesn't use a lot of moving parts.

If they did make an AO, I'm sure it would be a great knife, but not one that I would ever add to my collection.

Spyderco does make (or used to make) the Citadel and Embassy auto knives but they are only available to LEO's and active duty military.

The more I'm getting into this knife hobby the more I'm avoiding assisted opening knives. I don't think Spyderco would make a successful AO knife with the types of designs they offer, nor do I think they'd sell very well if they managed to make one.

I'm sure spyderco could do it if they wanted to, but why would they? Like someone else said, get a waved spydie if you need a fast opening.

Wow. Amazing to see so many anti-AO Spyderco fans.
I also wouldn't care for an AO spyderco. I've got some Kershaws, ZTs and Benchmades with AOs, and they're not getting much carrying time. Also, they're less reliable, I'd say. My leek's spring broke after less than a year of owning the knife.
It really has nothing on a good Spyderco folder. If you practice / use knife enough, then you should be able to open it as quickly as an AO knife.

I was at the Factory Outlet store, and I was talking to someone there (I know it was one of Sal's family members, but I cant remember who anymore!) and they said they wouldn't. Apparently Ken Onion approached Spyderco before Kershaw with the Speed Safe design, and they turned it down because they thought it blurred the lines between Auto and Manual knives. I might be wrong on that, but that's what I seem to remember hearing.

I love both my Waved Spydercos, Endura 4 Waved, and a P'Kal. I don't carry any assist any more in other brands either.

No thanks. Spydercos designs are great without AO. They don't need it IMO.
