Any Bare Tang Pictures?

I wonder what the tang looks like inside the handle. Does anyone have pictures of it? Perhaps from replacing an original handle?

Second, are there different types of hidden tangs made by the HI kamis? Perhaps one for most handles with a peened tip and then a wider one that pins can be inserted through.

I'm not referring to the full tang style where the handles are actually scales. I mean the full length hidden tangs.

This would be interesting to see.

Edit: Gee, I just saw the thread title. I should have named it something else. I didn't intend a double meaning.

Here ya go:

From a little project of mine that turned into a fairly dramatic odyssey by the end...rehandling a 20" sirupate. Standard full tang. You can see why they're often referred to as "kangaroo tail" rather than "rat tail" tangs around here. :)

I recently pulled a handle from a khukuri from another company and it looked pretty much the same - except that the handle/tang fit wasn't as tight and required some filling to firm things up. This, and other pics of khukuri tangs that I've seen, leads me to believe that this configuration is pretty much the industry standard for khukuris.

EDIT: Holy crap, Steve, I just noticed that you're platinum. Get yerself an avatar!

avatar? what's that do for ya? (sez the guy without a picture :>)

Warning -- thread veer in progress.

It's a hip way to express your individuality on the internet, or something.

For me, it's a method of sharing my (lack of) creativity with the world; failing that, it allows me to force everyone to associate my name with a picture of a Japanese woman holding a banner depicting my last avatar. (And in the process, showing off my mad PSP skillz.)

I don't know if "memebashing" has entered the popular lexicon or not, but if it has, avatars allow one to engage in this as well. If it hasn't, remember who said it first.

Avatars: recommended. It's a matter of cultural...nay, global...importance. :D

And it dont matter how primitive they are:confused:

More an an expression I think...

When you are over 60:eek:

"Hip" is an ache:D

"memebashing" is yours Dave;) First one!

Veering is a specialist subject... also much fun!!!

In retrospect, my comments don't make quite as much sense now that I've changed both my avatar and my sig. But worry not -- the Japanese lady and the banner will return in due time. Hip is not an ache for me currently, but nearly everything else aches.

And I'm a memebasher now. Rock on.

(I quote songs now. Any song quoted by me has, by default, received the Satori  seal of approval and is relevant to my life, just in case anyone is wondering. And no, I don't box right now, but I play judo and I am injured and angry about it...and I'll be back in the saddle on Friday, assuming that the healing process continues as it has been. Find me a song about an angst-filled judoka and I'll quote that instead if it's any good.)

And you guys thought that I just quoted the pessimistic songs. :)

G'day Dave,
A Kangaroo tail tang....now I should be able to rehandle one of them. Is the 'black stuff' laha.? Have much getting it back to-gether ?
After re-handling did it become a boomerang kukri.? Could use a couple of them on OZ to tackle a couple of my 7ft. wild kangas

And if you grind off the peened area and rehandle too many time then your khuk looks like this.

It's a new model for the Kami's! A Foxy Folly for guys with only 1 finger! :D I'm in for two of them...

N.

P.S. Thought at first by the title that this was an "R" rated thread. ;)

Yup, that's fer shure!;)
One thing though is that when you rehandle any khuk with the habaki bolster you can cut the flat part of the bolster off and gain as much as 3/8 of an inch on the tang depending on how long the flat part is. :D

Deargawdinheaven !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DON'T let the kamis see that picture !!

Thanks for posting the picture Dave, I've wondered what they looked like every time someone talked about doing handle work.

What tune is that sang to???

I keep imagining it sang to the tune of Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega.

Hi Dave:

Thanks to everyone for the tang pics. I was curious to see if they were broad enough to put pins through if it ever needed to be rehandled.

Have you tried drilling the tang for pins? If so, how hard was the tang?

Has anyone tried having an extension or broader tang welded on?

I tried to have an avatar, but couldn't get it to work.

I am avatarless.
