Hey Guys...

Just wondering if there are any bear hunters here ??

Anyone getting as excited about it as I'am ???

I'm starting to get my gear together already..

Stands need to be pulled out yet, checked, fixed and possibly painted..
Crossbow and Shotgun need to be looked at yet.. I was hoping to take up my new Steyr 300 win mag up with me,, but it still needs a good scope, another $400-500 toy I can't afford right now. The Crossbow and shotgun will have to do ...

I'm taking my entire family with me this year,, and my 13 year old boy will be sitting with me to run the camera..He's pretty excited about the whole thing..
My wife on the other hand is less than thrilled about spending a week in a mouse infested cabin with a bunch of hunters drinking beer..
Hopefully she'll have a good time and join me in the stand for an evening sit or two...

We are leaving in two weeks to go set ladder stands, and my son's hang on, who will be sitting above me ,hopefully Very quietly...

Last year our group, out of 24 hunters took 19 bears, the biggest being a Whopping 610 lbs live weight.
I gotta learn to sit tight and not shoot all these 100-175lb bears and wait for the big boys to come out and play....

Anyway,, so Who's looking forward to Opening day ??

Never hunted them in a stand,used dogs,Black and Tan,Walker,Plotts.
used them on Mountain lions also. Hunted in Idaho,Colorado,Utah in the earlier 80's.Got two on my own by stalking one in Wyoming 78 another in Alaska 99.I helped some guys set out bait barrels( usually Carp:fish) ,,and used chocolate malted milk balls ,stuck them in rock crevices and in cracks and hollows of trees, close to the barrels. They said it made the bears stay around longer diggin' at the candy.I used a Bear recurve 48 # on the bears, with a Ruger 44 mag pistol as backup.I used a Ruger 22 mag hollow point on the cats.Let me know how you do this year.

Here in Michigan you get a permit by lottery. You have to apply by county not state wide. It's a pain, I don't even know anybody who has ever goten a permit.

August 1st is opening day here in Washington. My favorite animal to hunt due to less people and they get my blood running more than other game. Here we get to take 2 animals a year but it is spot and stalk hunting only. The greeners got hound hunting and baiting banned awhile back. I usually hunt the mountain meadows or the huckleberry patches. You ever hear of the book "The Education of a Bear Hunter" by Ralph Flowers? Great book written by a local hunter. Good luck to all the hunters and be safe.
Jason

Sure, me!
Oops, just realized you wrote bear and not beer. Forget about it. :D

Spot and stalk here too. .44mag lever action. taken all mine inside of 100 yards. It's a thrill to outwit a bear.Last one was a 240 lb boar.
Last year went with one of my boys( hunter apprentice) and he and I got within 20 or so yards of a nice 150 lb bear. He had a bow. When it came time to shoot he froze. No matter what I said, he couldn't shoot. Was funny, cause the bear was just standing there broadside sniffing the air finally got a scent a was gone. He made it up later on in the year though,

hstdist,
That is a dandy buck your boy got! Did he get him with the bow? Great picture, wish there were more hunting pictures here. I would love to see pictures with game taken and the knives used to field dress them.
I hunt with a 300 win mag and a thompson center contender in 35 remington. Most bears taken have been within 100 yards here also.
Jason

Hey Jason,
He took the buck with my .44 mag. sitting on a scrape one shot at about 15 yrds. Yeah we could do with a hunting forum. All my young'uns have easy to use and sharpen hunting knives Scarade, Karbar). I figue they'll get their own personal good quality ones that suit them. I bought them all good camp knives that they pack when they are in the bush all 4 of 'em own Siegle knives of various sizes, plus each own has a Leatherman. My two oldest when they turned 18 got custom folders  My daughter @14 is the only one I know who wears a livesay necker around town.

Hey Guys....

Dagger..

Thanks for the picture.. That is for sure one Big assed bear!!

ToolSteel..

Anytime you want to go black bear hunting, let me know...
I'm just across the border from MI about 30 mins, and our bear hunting woods are about 6 hours from here. 2 Hours N of Toronto...

We are Heavily populated with bears in that area...Lots and Lots of bears..
Our Guide/Outfitter is Right ontop of things,, and we have pretty close to 60,000+ acrea of bear hunting property. Not only does he have some of the best spots,, he's probably the cheapest in Ontario..
I've heard of bear hunts going for $1500.00-2000+CDN,, He's nowhere near that...

Drop me a note and I'll hook you up with one of the best bear hunts in Ontario...

Thanks guys..

BTW.. Both my bear were taken at 17-20 yards with a bow!! :)
Up close and personal like....:)

Eric...

I went bear hunting in Quebec in 1998. Think the cost was $800? Buddy and me both got bears the first evening in the stand. I ended up using a 870 Remington pump shotgun with slugs. One shot--one dead bear. I wouldn't mind going again using a muzzleloader or handgun but I'm not interested in paying the gun tax to go hunting in Canada again.

Bows? 300 win mags? 44 mag lever actions?
Don't nun a ya hunt griz with knives nomore?
This is a knife forum taint it!

17-20yards, sheesh, try grabbin holt a one and wrasslin it fer a bit afor ya stick yer knife in it's rib cage, thats up close n personal! :D

Only things I've ever hunted successfully were dove, pheasant, and lizards when I was a kid. Oh yeah, we shot pidgeon about 50 times with bb guns once. It finally fell out of the tree. That was one tough bird!
I've been deer hunting three or four time but didn't see any deer.
Guess I'll have to be satisfied with moo meat.

yes I am excited I hunt them with a bow, which in my area 3A in PA is all I can use. Its every exciting stuff. I have a farm in PA and i hunt bears, deer, squirrels, rabbits, grouse, geese etc. on it. The largest I have taken weighed in around 422 dressed. Which to me is a very nice black bear. The season for me doesnt start until Nov 15 and only runs until the 16 so its a very short season. Hopefully I will get a nice one this year....good luck to all.

I eneded up with an out-of-state archery bear tag on a Wyoming hunt several years ago. My friend drew an archery/muzzleloader moose tag. I didn't get drawn for mule deer or elk, but could buy a bear tag over-the-counter. I got a nice 'cinnamon' black bear at 20 yards with a 50# Bear recurve bow. It was pretty exciting. Have the 6' X 6' rug hanging on the wall here at home. Good memories.
We brought the hams home to Missouri and my wife cooked one of them for her Grandmother's 80th birthday dinner. Nobody knew that it was bear meat until after we ate, and it was a big hit. I don't know what to tell you it tasted like...other than bear.
Like any other wild game, if it is properly taken care of, and properly prepared...it can be very good.

We didn't care for the meat. Very greasy. From what I've read you can make good pie crusts from the lard?
Indeed on the pie crust,or just about any fried food.
I like to smoke spring bear meat....it taste like smoked ham.....maybe because the bear and pig are related.

Do any of you kill for sport?

I think that's wrong if you do.

Killing a bear or a lion or whatever with a rifle is no big whoop.

Kill a bear with a crossbow, and then eat it! I'm ok with that.

Don't kill what you will not eat. It's common sense.

Do you eat the mountain lions? If not why shoot and kill them?

Joe Dirt,

Nice hijack. Please don't do it again. Unless you have anything relevent to add to the topic of the thread please refrain from injecting your views on hunting into it. Save it for your own thread.
