Any bushcrafters among us?

Well it was a brisk 8 degrees today so no woods time for me. I dont mind cold weather but single digits just seems to get colder and colder every year.

Garth

The only time I spent outside was walking from building to car and car to building. No reason to linger in this cold.

I had a short walk tonight after processing a deer in our family shop; my hands I guess were still a little damp, and they were throbbing by the time I got home..told my Son when I walked in the door.."Tonight's the night it would suck to have to make a fire outside.."..seriously, this weather would make ol' Les reach for a bic, no doubt.

I was actually considering going out tomorrow and seeing about making a small fire. It snowed here last Monday and again Wednesday morning so we have plenty of wet and cold here. I figure it's good practice and if I fail I can walk back inside and rethink what mistakes I made. If I get fire, then I'll know I can and might even learn something.

Yep, firemaking practice in the cold (firesteel fire specifically), is best done near artificial heat :) lol
Seriously though, that is about a good of test you can get, especially in subfreezing temps..any inefficiency will be apparent; I learned the value of super thin wood curls, and making sure I didn't attempt to start a fire until I had more than enough of each phase of prep, doing the same thing.

If I had waited to try that while I was in a real survival situation, it would have been ugly for me; also taught me that a Bic will always be in my pocket, jic ;).
