Any Cru Forge V Successes?

Cru Forge V has been out for a few months now, and I haven't seen too much of it being mentioned here.
Any of ya'll have any successes - and/or failures - you might like to share?
Any forging practices, times/temps and "quench oil-voodoo" to explain these failures/successes?
Opinions?

The only problem I have with it is I didn't order enough.

Seems, in my forge anyway, that the decarb is quite pronounced and thick. Could have been the atmosphere during that session. Do NOT rely on a file to test for hardness after quench.

Takes a KEEN edge.

Hardens like crazy, even an edge quench hardens 90% of the tang. I used 3 normalizing cycles and 130 degree canola, soaked at 1500 for 10 - 15 minutes.

I tried water quenching one or two just for fun and they broke. Nice fine grain revealed.

I wish I had more experience with both 1095 and CruForgeV to discern which one I like better but I think CruForegeV is in the lead by a bit.

I have laminated three blades with the steel to wrought iron and heat treated them. They do seem to harden quite well in McMaster Carr fast oil.
Have not yet had a chance to finish hone them and test the edge qualities.
Compared to W2 though the steel feels more alloyed and hard and stiff in forging and cold working before heat treating. Feels better to me on the intial honing on the stones than O1 does.

I hope to fire the forge this weekend and hammer on some. I'll make a few test blades and see what happens. How about you Karl? Have you made any more blades with Cru forge?

Pete, to be honest, I've been so covered up I haven't had time to play around.
I'm lucky to get the things done that I need to.

Hi guys, I've been using cruforge since it came out and order a bit every payday. I have forged about a fifteen blades so far and really like it. It forges like 5160 to me, got to keep it hot. I heat treat like 5160-01 and have'nt had a problem yet, heating in an oven to 1525 and quenching in light mineral oil at 130. I fianally got some Mcmasters 11 second oil and may try that this weekend. Good forging to ya'll.

I've been finishing up the pile of already forged W2 blades I had on the bench, but I plan to forge some of the CruForgeV this week. I am hoping to make a cleaver style comp knife out of some of the 2 inch stock for Gembloux.

Hi guys, new to Blade Forums--I'm a sawmaker in search of a better steel, and found this site thru a google search. Hearing good things about Cru Forge V. Any updates to this string? Many thanks, Mark

They always say you can make blades out of saw steel but now someone is asking if you can make good saws out of blade steel? Truly the world has come full circle :p
