Any DVD experts out there?

Anyone here have any expertise on DVD players? Well, I have a problem. I recently bought the movie "Gladiator" on DVD and the freakin disk won't play on my player!!!

I tried four copies of the same movie , purchased and borrowed from different sources, and still no luck. The t.v. screen keeps saying "please check disk". I have heard of some "under $200" players not being compatible with some disks, but my DVD player is a Mitsubishi, which costs more than that. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
 
I'm no expert on DVDs, but further informations about the points below will help experts to answer.

- When did you buy the DVD player?
Very early players that does not take "region code" sometimes do not play DVDs with region codes.

- Does it play CD music?
If it does, there's no problem in laser/lens unit, nor in carriege/motor unit.
If it doesn't... well, it needs some parts replacement in Mitsubishi factory.

There's another possibility that your player dislilke movies with edged tools. How does it do with "Crocodile Dundee", "Exposure", or "Seven Samurai"?

I got my Mitsubish DD-3000 early this year. I am very mad because my brother's DVD player is 1/3 the cost of mine and his plays "Gladiator"! I figured that the more expensive players should be more compatible with all DVD movies out there. I had the same problem when my wife's cousins husband gave me a DVD from Japan and it didn't work.
 
This happens with different some formats of DVD. I have purchased The Little Mermaid 2 fieve times and it will not work. Granted it's not Gladiator, but it means the world to my daughter. I have checked with a variety of groups and found that certain DVDs and players are just not compatable. My DVD is a Magnavox and has run over 90 different movies. It looks like your best course of action would be to check out some on-line places and see if they will be offering Gladiator on VCD which should run on your DVD.

Here's another incompatibility about DVDs from foreign countries because of "region codes" to limit the copyright under control. Everyone on X country must by a DVD movie of X version for the sake of the agent of Hollywood in X country. Your case is very rare as it usually happenes on people in non US countries, who have to wait their versions of movies for some months.

The problem with "Gladiator" was pointed out by Bandit, I think.
