Hey folks- anyone hearing anything about any new ESEE offerings? I recently resharpened my S35VN ESEE 3 and it’s renewed my interest in collecting more ESEE’s I don’t need. I found something on the ESEE site talking about a revamped AGK for 2020, but for the life of me, I can’t remember that release and can’t find one anywhere… leading me to believe it doesn’t exist.

So what do you know?

This was announced in 2020. Wonder if they'll drop the CR3.0 at the same time?

Yeah, that’s the link I referenced, too.
If they did a CR3.0 in S35VN I’d go bananas. Unfortunately I don’t think that’s in the cards yet.

Does “upgrade” mean “removed” in this context? I don’t hate the coating, but I don’t love it, either.
It was in jest. I have an Izzy 2 with their 'black oxide' finish which is fine, and is a knife I actually really like, but I never warmed up to the standard blade coatings (nor most blade coatings in general, regardless of manufacturer).

The difference between my coated Izzy and S35 Izzy is night and day. I respect what they’ve done with the 1095 so much that I use it more, and I dig the beaten look it gets, but honestly the coating can be annoying for sure.

I kinda wish that wasn’t a joke.

I have both, but I definitely prefer the black oxide finish over the coated blades. I don’t hate the coating, especially on something like my ESEE 4 that lives in my truck. It gives it a little extra protection from the humidity here in coastal South Carolina. On my everyday users I either strip them or I’ll get the black oxide. I’m weird because I don’t really like the s35vn Izula all that much (I’ve considered giving it away) and I’d rather have the 1095. But something like the AGK or CR 2.5 (or my wish of a Candiru) in s35vn sounds great to me.

Edit: To be fair, my stainless Izzy came with a funky grind, that was crooked, that I didn’t like. I put it on the Wicked edge and fixed it, but because of the original grind being so far off I don’t like the way the bevels look now. One side has a bevel that is wider/higher up than the other side and with my OCD it really bothers me. So, it’s functionally great, but the aesthetic bugs me.

I don't know why ESEE doesn't make knives in 14C28N or AEB-L (13C26). The blades would still be stainless, but have better toughness than anything they currently offer. Those two steels are on par with 52100 in the toughness category.
I don’t think ESEE really has much of an issue with toughness. People really have to abuse the heck out of current offerings to achieve failure, particularly in 1095. If I was going to fire an izula out of a cannon into a redwood and hope to get it back, I’d pick 1095.

I agree. I'd definitely buy some.
I like s35vn, but not really in a harder use fixed blade. And a tough stainless option would be great.

I think 420hc, aeb-l, 14c28n would all be good choices for ESEE’s knife lineup, in stainless steel. They are all tough, easy to sharpen, and not brutally expensive. To me that kind of fits ESEE’s niche and business model. I would also love to see thinner blade stock and the use of cpm-3v, but that’s just me dreaming 😂
