Any Excitement For The Spyderco Szabo???

GPknives has a preorder price of $180 which is pretty reasonable for that much steel IMO. I'm also kind of iffy on the Lighting Strike gold carbon fiber coloration. I guess I will have to see it in person before I love or hate it.

Alas I am forced to buy it none the less, its kind of in the same league as the Espada Large and so forth, just much better looking.

I don't understand why I should be excited about this knife. I currently have an Endura and a G10 Police. This new knife will only have a blade that is 0.3" longer than my Police knife. I would love to be wrong. But, I don't see what it has to offer that the G10 Police can't. The blade needed to be at least 5" long.

I currently EDC carry a Rajah II with a 6" blade. I would trade in a heartbeat to a Spyderco knife if they made a large knife. I like Coldsteel. But, Spyderco knives are day and night superior in quality to CS. I don't understand why they let Coldsteel own this market? The Szabo just isn't big enough.

P.S. I carry a 6" folder because California does not have a limitation on the length of a folding blade concealed. Carrying a fixed blade concealed is a felony. And, my current county does not offer CCW. So, a big folding knife is my best defensive choice.

bushing system and compression lock make it a helluva lot more easy to deploy and close (one handed) compared to the backlock and tight action on the police and endura.

I can't wait to wave em!

That might mean something if the blade was bigger. The blade size is the key. It offers nothing my Police doesn't. Spyderco reinvented the same wheel - again. How many knives does this company make that are essentially the same knife? Dozens. That might be interesting to their small fan club that collects each micro variation. I am sure Cold Steel appreciates this lack of marketing innovation. They are still the only company making a truly big folder.

I like the look of the Szabo but I have to agree that ,as I indicated somewhere above, the blade should have been longer to put the Szabo into truly big folder terrritory.
Cold Steel does indeed stand virtually alone when it comes to really big folders although I think Sog does deserve an honourable mention for the 5" bladed Pentagon elite 2 and the Spec-elite 2.
I have most of CS's XL folders but one I don't have yet is the 6" blade Hold-out 1. When the Szabo is released I'm really going to have to think hard if I want to pay about a $100 for the 6" CS or [I think] about twice that for the Szabo which isn't much longer than my Police 3.

The problem with the SOG knives is that there is nothing to keep your hand from moving forward onto the blade if you hit something hard.

And every pentagon/spec elite I've handled has significant up and down blade play. I keep an eye out for them at gun shows and blade shows to try to find one without blade play, because I like the overall design of it. Maybe I've just had bad luck...

I really don't think SOG nor Cold Steel should be mentioned as comparisons to this knife. This is in a class of it's own and is going to be a high quality taichung model with insane fit and finish.

Excitement!? I saw it for the first time today in an e-mail, and just put in a pre-order. :)

Lightning strike carbon fiber scales, compression lock, s30v steel, and with a blade shape like this... Of course i'm excited! Although the hump for the spydie hole spoils the blade shape for me...
Have already ordered one and it's one its way to me!
