I own a Spyderco Sharpmaker and find it a very good sharpener. I have a set of diamond rods, but was wondering if the Byrd Duckfoot offers any advantages over the Sharpmaker.
I own a sharpmaker and bought the duckfoot for my brother. I tried the duckfoot to reprofile some s30v blades and it didn't work that well. Better than the medium brown stone but I still wasn't happy with it. I then bought a DMT course diamond stone and hold it against the sharpmaker stone when I want to reprofile s30v. I can't compare the sharpmaker diamond rods to the duckfoot.
I posted a small review in post #32 of the above thread.
I agree with yablanowitz ; however:
The 600 grit diamond coating is comparable to a fine DMT stone.
The surface is all over covered so this one comes in handy for strange / odd blade and tool shapes.
Comes with a leather sheath. Nice compact for sharpening in the field imo.
The corners are narrow and rounded. The rounded corners work well on hawkbill blades.
I don't use the 40 degree angle. I more use the corners like a steeling rod eyeballin' the correct angle needed.
It has tree different size grooves for sharpening spearpoints fishhooks small rounded chisels etc. And a 1 by 5 inch flat surface.
