3D has replaced real world prototypes in every application it is used in and it is alot faster to draw a 3D model than it is to do a mockup in lexan or cardboard, especially if there is editing involed.
Obviously you have to know how to use the software in order to get value out of it. The problem comes in when someone gives up and doesn't spend the time nessesary to learn how to use the tools available to them.
