Has anyone taken folding knife by air travel? Does custom allow passengers to keep it in check-in luggage or leave it at home? I need info? what about multitool on the same issue?
What Ed said. I've flown with anything from a couple folders to several folders, a few fixed blades, and a Kukri in my checked luggage over the past year and never had a problem, but absolutely DO NOT try to bring anything on in your pockets. It will get confiscated.
If you are going in or out of a US airport don't transport a switchblade, pushbutton, or equivalent automatic-opening knife in your luggage. They are illegal to import and even interstate transportation can get you in trouble.
For carry-on luggage you need to avoid almost any metal tool even if it does not have a blade. I had a Swiss-Tech Microtechnician (with no sharp edges and no sharp points) blocked at airport inspection. At least they didn't try and arrest or fine me for that one. http://www.keychain-tools.com/st_microtechss.asp
