Any former Boy Scouts? Remember sharpning knives old school.

You mean there's another way!

Not only do I sharpen old school, but several years ago I was rooting around in the attic, and found a box with my old boy scout stone in it. I used it on a knife and was surprised how fast and how sharp it got. A few minutes on the stone, a light strop on the back of a Dickies work belt, and it shaves hair. So just for yuks these past few years I've actually went back to using my old boy scout stone. Works GREAT!

I may have one of those rectangular gray stones, I need to dig through a box my mom filled with my old "treasures."

Still sharpen my knives the same way. My technique and ability has gotten better over the years, this forum has helped me alot.

I think I still have my stone from Cub Scouts. I'll have to see if I can find it.

My father spent time working as a butcher. He taught me how to sharpen knives using a dual sided carborundum stone and a steel. It was a proud day indeed when I was trusted to sharpen the kitchen knives. Now days however, due to things like s30v, and Queens thick edge D2, I have switched to diamond stones. Those old carborundums still work fine though. Just takes a little longer.

I still have my small carbarundum stone for pen knives and my larger double sided for tools from 50 years ago
Soaked in 3 and 1 oil
Then a newer set of two Buck stones with fine oil

But messy messy to use
And they did not work on the much harder D2

Now DMT in water for easy clean quick sharpening
And a lovely set of waterstones for methodical sharpening

Waterstones and DMT are so much easier to use then store

Arkansas stones are my preferred method of sharpening even today. They cut slower than some of the newer stuff, but they leave a beautifully polished edge. They also have amazing tactile feedback and will last a lifetime without wear. In my opinion they are the best bang for your buck and the most fun to sharpen with. Sure they take longer but in my opinion they make a much finer and more polished edge than some of the newer tech options available.

Just my two cents though!
