Any GEC #36 (Sunfish in general) fans or users ?

The RR is a nice one. I've got several Rough Riders, they're top notch, also I dig that EKA I've got a couple of them, they're superb. I think that's a laminate Mora, I've got on of those on the way too, and I even have a Red On Arm Jack RR like that one. LOL we have similar taste in knives

thanks. the sunfish was gained in a swap with someone around here. forget his screen name but hes in montana. lol
the eka is a 38, sort of a swedish take on the sodbuster. the steel is really great; easy to sharpen and holds the edge. probly not telling you anything you dont already know.
yes, its a laminate mora. havent used it much yet but it seems like an excellent knife.
im a big fan of inexpensive, quality working knives.

I do love mine. The steel bolsters and frame combined with the stamped blade marking make for a really fun knife.

The only thing I would change about mine would be to have ebony covers.

For some reason I have a void in that handle material in my collection!

As am I, I own some more expensive production knives, and it's very hard for me to turn down Moras, and RR knives. The EKA I have in 12C27 will take a downright scary edge.

BigfattyT that looks quite ergonomic, and useable.

Keeps her fast to the ground on a windy day.

You know it!

Without it?

Oops.

I had never paid enough attention to these to notice the specs but dang, the size is surprising and that eo with wood covers is making me drool somethin' fierce.

Were I not set on the nick/long pull combination, available only on the two-blade all-steels, I would have jumped on a single-blade EO with wood covers. Very, very fine, and I know I'd appreciate using the main blade without having the secondary's spine protruding (it's not obtrusive, but the handle would obviously be most comfortable without it).

The only thing I would change about mine would be to have ebony covers.

Keep cookin', and yours might blacken up yet. :D

I truly wish I could like them. They just look like such a darn circus to me. In fact, I can't stand them.

If I have to try to like any given knife or pattern, I quickly move on and leave it to those for whom it hits the spot. There are just too many great patterns to (have to try to) choose from to spend any extra energy trying to acquire a taste. Saves a spot o' cash, too. :)

But sometimes, previously disregarded patterns have a way of sneaking up, then Pouncing. That's what happened with this one; I used to think Sunfish were ridiculous, and kinda still do, but once I reached the tipping point I was hooked.

I'm glad.

Two pumpkin-seed bone. One a user, one set aside for my son.

And a Banana Peel Yellow.

I also have a Black Cherry all steel version - That I've never photographed.

This thread makes me contemplate the "One pattern a month challenge" with Sunfish kicking things off in January.

I have a Crimson Grizzly #36 (red jigged bone) that I purchased and at the time believed it was going to be "the one". It was fairly expensive and I bought a couple cheap Frost Sunfish's that are pretty much the same size but a little lighter. Carried one of those for a while both to get used to the pattern, decide about the weight issue, and make a renewed judgement about Frost Cutlery quality for $12. Then I got a #42 and all thoughts left me of carrying it, but who knows what I will do next month. The knife thing is kind of a unpredictable deal for me in terms of what I like and so forth. But I always go back to the Trapper pattern. I know two things right now.... I like SAKs, and I like a handful of a pocket knife that I can grip easily; no two finger stuff.

I just don't understand the need or uses for a blade this wide. Sunfish, Elephants Toe, Whaler all seem to be a novelty knife design for me. But that just my personal opinion. Many patterns have been developed to fit a special need or use and if we didn't have our own thoughts, there wouldn't be so many patterns available to us.

I also have the same thoughts about the wide blade. Don't know? Strength? Spread peanut butter? That's part of the reason why I keep going back to essentially a trapper pattern for using.

I suppose now it's just a novelty design. Honoring a piece of knife heritage so to speak by keeping this design on the market. There's obviously a demand for it - whether it be from users or collectors - but the design dates back to 1904 and was geared toward 'hard service and rough work'. I use to be heavy into collecting them at one point, but have sold or traded most of my early ones. I just liked the design. The Humongous of pocket knives.

Now, whenever I bring out my #36, I shall proudly proclaim,

"It's a axe."

The sunfish sort of strikes me as an original "Hard use Folder", from those advertisements. I personally am eager to see mine when it arrives, I think I'll enjoy carrying, and using it. Not as an axe though, but still it's substantial.

Ever since I first saw one, I have had ambiguous feelings towards the sunfish pattern. On one hand it seems gaudy and ridiculous, while on the other I get the usefulness and strength. Well, this thread and a price below $12 shipped pushed me over the edge on the purchase of a rough rider large sunfish in tobacco bone. I'm super excited to see if I like the pattern! I also am looking forward to trying a different dying method on it and classing it up to black bone. Should be in my hands Friday at the latest.

That RR Smooth Tobacco Bone is pretty classy stuff! But it's your knife.
