I think I'll be getting the Gransfors Brux book that comes with their axes in a few weeks when I order a saw from Lee Valley. But, what other axe books are out there? Any MUST HAVE wilderness use books?
Horace Kephart "Camping and Woodcraft" is great - get a hardback off ebay - wait for a cheap one.
Mors Kochanski's "Bushcraft"
Jaeger "Wildcraft Wisdom"
Anything by RM Patterson - "Dangerous River" and "Trails to the Interior" are in many libraries.
Dudley Cook's "Keeping Warm With An Axe" is out of print but libraries can get for you. Lots about axes..
Plenty more if you are interested. Marion Poff made up a list.
Thanks Jimbo! I looked forKochanski's book at Chapters, but they can't get it in
I have only recently been really turned on to hatchets, hawks, axes, and the like. Now I am fascinated. I think it is because I know little about axes, and once I get interested in something, I must learn as much as I can!! I sharpened an axe we have here to a shaving convex edge. I love my grinder Oh, this axe stuff also reminds me of an afternoon well spent with my Great Uncle. He made me split a bunch of wood with a wedge. One day while reading about axes something triggered that memory for me. Ahh...
I found Mors Kochanski's book at my university's library. It is GREAT! I also found a book by an ex Brit soldier (I forget the name) on survival, and an SAK and khukuri were promoted as being the tools to use. That just reminded me that there are different strokes for different folks.
