Hey Guys,

My name is Jeff and I'm new to the forum. I tried learning a bit about knife making while home on R&R from over seas and would like to learn some more. As of now I'm a civ. contractor in Iraq. This being said It will be awhile till I can get my hands dirty. If there are any recomendations for books I would love to hear them. I saw a few online but did not want to drop $30 on a book if I cant flip the pages to see the material.

Thanks for any help.

Sorry if this question has been asked before.

The $50 knife shop is the most popular book recommended I think. I've read through it and also think it's a great start.

If you might be interested in videos then I suggest S.R. Johnson's Sub-hilt fighter video. Steve takes you through all of the aspects of how he makes a knife. He doesn't forge and he doesn't go into heat treating (since he's using stainless steels that can be sent out). If you're interested in forging your knives and home heat treating then I think the best video I've seen is the Tai Goo and Tim Lively primitive knifemaking video.

If you're interested in forging, a good book would be Hrisoulas' "The Complete Bladesmith." Heck, it's good even if you're not interested in forging.
