Any good "brick & mortars" in/around Cleveland, Ohio?

Hey all,

:)

I'm a relative newcomer to the community. Although I've already acquired a very modest collection of high-end production and custom blades, I'm interested in doing more first-person shopping. All of my quality blades have, up until now, come from Internet retailers or fellow enthusiasts -- while I've been more than happy with what I've purchased I still can't help but think that some hands-on may help expand my horizons and help me climb the learning curve.

:)

Are there any good, either high-end production or custom blade shops in or around an hour's drive of Cleveland, Ohio?

Thanks!

PS: Mods, sorry if this is in the wrong sub-Forum...I couldn't decide if this fit better here or in the "Community - Community Center" area. Please move if appropriate/necessary, thank you.

Hi, Rat, I am from Canton, and I have no idea!!!
I've been waiting for a decent knife show to come to the area. I guess I'll have to keep waiting. There is one guy who knows the answer. He has the Copenhagen sign on his avatar, and his name is Pirtle...... I'll send him an email.

How long of a drive is it for you 2 to get to knoxville or Atlanta.I know of 3 good places in the Knoxville area and the Blade Show will be in Atlanta in april.

TOO far.....
I thought about going to see the Busse table at Cincinati this weekend, but he was set up at a gun show. If it were a knife show, I would have went...... (but that's just me)

There is a store named Cutters Corner in Great Northern Mall. William Henry Knives is the highest end company represented as well as many other manufacturers. Not a bad place but also higher priced than mail order houses.

Walking Man,do you not like gun shows? The ones around here have alot of knives too, plus I like guns too.

BIG thanks to all.

:)

Atlanta's about 10 to 12 hours (one-way) for her Northern suburbs (Alpharetta/Roswell, where my parents are) away by Interstate, taking as direct a route as possible. TN at about the 5 hour mark. I've never been to Knoxville before, per-se, so I cannot give an exact travel time.

I'd be willing to do the trip if timed correctly, however, April almost never works for my schedule. :( The expense of such a trip (to Atlanta), too, would likely mean that I'd try to get to SHOT SHOW rather than do the drive.... I hope to attend the Cincy and NY shows next year, and perhaps some even up in MI -- all of which should come between 4 to 8 hours of driving, one-way.

I'm looking forward to giving the Great Northern Mall store a try, thanks, dunefan...and hopefully Pirtle will stop-by this thread, too.

:)

Thanks again, everyone!

PS: Anyone going to the Gun & Knife show at Summit County Fairgrounds at the end of the month? How's that one for decent blades?

u812, NO; gunshows are fine, but I'm not going to drive 4-5 hours for one. BTW, I have gotten knives at gunshows before.
Actually I would have gone, but I couldn't find anyone to go with me. :(

Thats my problem too, finding someone to go with me.

Hi Guys, Here is the brief list that I'm aware of...

-Aforementioned Cutters Corner in Great Northern (They also have one somehwere on the West side)
-Kame's Sporting Goods in Canton (Nice selection of factory knives)
-There is a Gun Shop in Cuyahoga Falls that carries an okay selection of midrange stuff but also had a MT Socom Elite D/A last time I was there. Name escapes me right now but if you want to go then e-mail me and I'll find it for you.

Probably the best selection in NE Ohio is at Fin Feather & Fur in Ashland. If you want to make an afternoon of it I'd say it's about a 75 - 90 minute drive from downtown Cleveland straight down Rt 71 at exit 186 I think (it's the Ashland Exit). Take the wife and drop her off at the outlet mall and keep heading South. They have a nice selection of factory knives in all ranges and a few customs even. Rick Hinderer helps works there on occasion and when he's there he usually has some of his knives with him, I've killed an hour there before just shooting the bull with him. Let him know your coming and he may even meet you there and bring a few along.

Good luck finding anything else, there are a few places that carry some Benchmades and a few more that carry some Columbia River but nothing worth making a special trip for. Ohio is definitely not a mecca for knife enthusiasts!

Thanks for letting me know this thread is here Ed and hope the list helps.

Kames used to have a really great stock of knives, however since the economy slumped, you're better off looking elsewhere. I really hate to say that about the store, because I'm friends with the manager, although they do still carry a decent selection of Spydercos, BM, etc. Good if you're curious, but no longer worth driving out of the way for. Sorry.

There are a number of custom makers in NE Ohio. Look for them in a recent copy of Knives (annual). I've seen knives by Tom Dowing, Rick Darby, George Koutsopoulos, and Bob Papp. Nice! I own a nice one by Mike Yurco, located in canfield (s. of Youngstown) last I knew. Knife dealers show up at gun shows in Akron (Tallmadge, really), Cleveland, and Medina. Most of the stuff is from China.:barf: :barf: :barf: However, I saw Spyderco, Benchmade, and Emerson at a recent gun show.

The only guy I knew of was Rick Hinderer.
but he is someone to check out.
BTW, Darryl Ralph works right outside of Columbus.

Doh! Good friend of ours coming into town this weekend -- and unfortunately, she and the wife aren't interested in blades. Have to skip this one.

I'll be at the Cambridge Show Friday hopefully. Sorry you can't make it Dumbo, it's not like there are a lot of things to do in Cambridge that you could keep them busy with while you shop for sharp things either :)

I live 5 minutes from the Akron (Tallmadge) Gun Show and go almost every time it's there. It is one of the better gun shows for knives but it's still dominated by the under $50 people, and tons of Paki knives.

There are literally tons of custom makers in NE Ohio, amazing ince there are zero places that carry their work.

FWIW, there was a dealer at the last Niles Gun Show who had a lot of high end production and reasonably priced used custom knives, he was wheeling and dealing pretty good on them so I bought a couple. It was a welcome change.

I think Tom Downing is the hardest working man in custom knives. He does beautiful work and I can't think of a single gun show I have been to in this area for the past 10 years that he wasn't at!

cpirtle and All,

cpirtle, we'll have to meet up one of these days at one of these shows -- I'm sure that there's *_A LOT_* that you can teach me, as I'm a fresh-'N-green newcomer.

:)

And it looks like I'll definitely have to pick up a copy of Knives Annual at the local bookstore if I can, as Thomas suggested, so that I can have a look-see at who all's around!

LOL... the only thing I can tech you is how to be way too picky about your knives and how to spend way too much money in the pursuit of them :)

Seriously though, I'd be happy to meet up with you some time at a gun show or something... maybe we need to arrange a little NE Ohio get together for anyone from BF to come by. We've talked about it in the past but never got anything off of the ground.

I know of at least a dozen members in our general vicinity, probably more..
