I just picked up some beech (not exotic, but oddly hard to find) at Armstrong Millworks in Highland, MI. They, like Rockler Woodworking in Royal Oak, have a cartload of turning blanks that range from "wine stopper" size (2x2x4") to longer pieces (2x2x18") to bowl blanks (6x6x4"). I picked up a few wine stopper blanks at Rockler that I thought had potential. The species I picked were zebrawood, rosewood, some sort of mahogany, and some other good-looking tropical wood whose name escapes me.
The things have been coated--and I mean "globbed on"-- with shellac, so they take some cleanup.
