I've been buying too many knives lately (or, at least, I've bought two expensive knives, haha) and really want to go for one more without spending too much. Open to folders or fixed blades, preferably something on the smaller side. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Look at Ontario Rat 1 for about Half of what you want to spend, You will have a hard time beating this knife for the $

I've been exploring this space, too. I can heartily recommend the Ontario Rat 1 and Rat 2, the Esee Zancudo, the Spyderco Tenacious and Cat, the Kershaw Knock Out and Leek. Today, I have an Enlan EL-01 with rosewood scales in my pocket. It's a terrible flipper, but a fun knife and it looks very "knice". :)

Opinel already mentioned.

You can get a Delica for "close" to 50. I think I saw a full flat grind go for 50 on the exchange recently.

New, you can find them for 59 from certain dealers.

Cold steel has some designs that I would include.

The triad lock is tough to beat. Lines tar and Mackinac hunter come to mind.

You might be able to pick up a discontinued recon 1. Thwy have changed the steel to a more expensive steel.

Here are two that haven't been mentioned yet. A couple of less-common items for your collection, one fixed and one folder.

Marttiini Lynx Lumberjack. Carbon steel, birch handle. $40.

AG Russell Featherlite. $35 for AUS8; $50 for VG-10.

Becker Bk15. It is currently being sold at a deep discount due to the fact that it is going out of production. Its a 5.5in long, 5/32in thick 1095 cro-van trailing point knife. Its got great ergos, excellent geometry, and a pretty good sheath. Right now, they're going for ~$40 or so (compared to the other midside Becker models the BK16/17, which usually cost ~$75). So I'd say its a great knife for the price.

Most of the other suggestions are excellent as well :).

Becker BK15 is a sweet mid-sized fixed blade.

+1 on the Ontario RAT-1 folder as well as the Kershaw Thermite and the Emerson-Kershaw folders.

In fixed blades <$50 some of the Ontario SpecPlus knives as well as the Schrade Bushcraft knives are interesting.

I've been more than happy with my BK11. It's really a great value for the quality and grind you get.
Find another sheath and don't strip the coating. It's there for a reason. It will rust like a mother if you do and you're going to hate the unneeded maintenance but I'm hard user so may be different for you.

I'll pile on for the BK-15, get one before they're gone!

Also, Svord Peasant.

Mora Bushcraft Black is a heck of a knife and can be had at that price.

The Mora Companion and No 1 are both excellent outdoors knives and can be had for under $20.

Victorinox Farmer or Pioneer is a handy little knife to always have on you.

Not too many locking folders at that price point I would consider.

Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter perhaps.
Vic SAKs are always good.
Mora Companion
Kabar BK-14
If you don't have one, I would suggest the BK-15.

CRKT Ripple is actually a really nice slim and light flipper for $30 bucks. Bought mine yesterday and I'm going to use the heck out of it so I can learn sharpening techniques on a cheap knife.

Another count for the bk15. I would also suggest an opinel, but go for the stainless, their carbon is good, but they do their stainless better.
if you want a smaller fixed blade suggestion, go with a BK11 for the bottle opener, or rhe bk14 for the same blade shape, but larger handle, minus the bottle opener (both have a new sheath that locks the knife in as well.)

Kershaw skyline +1
Kershaw Cryo
Kershaw Blur +1

Spyderco Tenacious +1
Spyderco Delica is probably also good but I havent owned one. I have handled the, and they are a great carry size

Victorinox Alox knives are nice as well
