I wanted to know if anyone out there has a quick change platen? I want something that would work on normal KMG grinder and have interchangeable platens I want to be able to switch between ceramic platen

to a harden steel one to a mild steel to a soft leather or carpet on or what ever and I was wondering if any on had something like that?

Thanks

Your current platen mount should have two holes in it. All you do is loosen the platen bolts and slide it off. Make all the platens you want to exchange with the original, or buy them. Nathan makes several types of platens, and all fit the KMG mount. It is a good idea for any difficult to mount or align platens be mounted on dedicated arms.

I bought 2 platens from Rob at kmg along with the angle brackets . So 2 bolts loosened to change them out . One regular and the other with glass glued on , works great.

I just thought that doing that would be sort of slow but it is do able....does Nathan still sell his harden steel platens and platen chiller?

Every once in a while they pop up, but they sell pretty quickly. I haven't seen any of his up for sale lately.

I keep a ratchet wrench and the needed size sockets in a can next to the grinder. Changes take seconds.

I change platens pretty frequently on my grinder. I use socket head cap screws (with the Allen head). It takes only a moment to swap out a platen. But even if you're using a regular hex head, it doesn't take much time at all.

The KMG is very simple and well designed.

It's been pretty busy in the shop this year which has been holding up projects like this, but I have some platens and chiller in process right now. Some D2 platens are due back from Peter's HT in a couple days.

I guess my first question would be "why?".
Changing between differently radiused platens I can understand, if you do a lot of hollow grinding.

The difference between glass and a flat piece of hardened steel will likely be negligible (other than the steel may heat up and wear faster), and mild steel will start wearing out / dishing by the time you make your 2nd knife.
I assume the leather/carpet? is for convex grinding, in which case I would recommend investing in a KMG rotary platen, as I think you'll prefer the results and the wear rate much to a piece of leather or other "fixed" material.

In that case, you want an extra tool arm, not a platen frame.

Just my $.02.
