I may be in the bay area these next two weeks, always looking for some restaurant suggestions. Have any favorite places? Its been a few years since I've stayed out there, anything Italian or Steak related would be most appreciated :)

couple of clubs come to mind.
the white swallow
the manhole
............. :( .......................

DN,
post again with the style of food you're interested in.

I go to SF a few times a year and love to eat (who doesn't?)

If you have a huge wad of cash to blow, try to get reservations at Gary Danko. The prix fix menu rocks and the wine list is phenomenal!!!

For Dim Sum, try Yank Sing (down in the financial district, closer to the water than SOMA). I used to live in Chicago and loved Three Happiness, but Yank Sing is better.

Either post or PM me with specific requests and I'll be happy to spout my recs in just about any price range (be warned, they are my opinions...and damned fine they are :D :D :D )

edited to add: oops, just read the Italian/Steak line... The Palm has great steaks and ONION LOAF (like thin onion rings, baked into a bread pan), but there are Palms all over. For Italian, I'll have to check in with my brother-lives in SOMA-I can never remember the name of the place he takes us. More later... ;)

edit #2: one place that comes to mind for good food overall, some Italian, some american, is Wolfgang Puck's Postrio . Took a date there long, long ago...the date went nowhere, but the food made the evening worthwhile. ;)

Nemmy, Nancy and I wen there years ago. We were in the Miyako Hotel on Post Street. It is attached to a complex that is, IIRC, the Japan Center or something like that.

Great little restaurants, including the original Benihana. Good stuff man.

There is also a place down at like Pier 39 that is by the water, or was. Don't remember the name, but it sets right by the water, and has 2 levels. A blue color theme comes to mind. Stinkin brain cells....

If you get over to Sasalito(sp?), there is a great place at the end of the south end of the shops on the bay. No name in the storage cells either, sorry man.

DocSaly/ThatHamGuy:

Thanks for the suggestions. I had no idea there was a Wolfgang Puck in SF, love that place!! I try to make a trip to B concourse every time I'm in ORD, lol :)

I've found some good Dim Sum places on the east coast, but Steak is my favorite of favorites. I'll look up The Palm and see if I'm near it.

I live down south of SF in Sillycon Valley (Los Gatos) I may be able to be able to give you some ideas drop me an e-mail and I'll get you my phone number and we can talk when you get in town. One of the best places in the Fisherman's Wharf area is Scoma's.

Cool, sounds good. Is that anywhere near Milpitas? I was down there recently for a few days.

DN-

No help with the steak locations, but I do have two suggestions.

I think you have to hit The House of Nanking @ 919 Kearny for dim sum.
Yeah, it's touristy and crowded around the peak dining hours, but if you
go during the off-times the quality/price ratio is excellent!

I had dinner at Kokkari Estiatorio on Jackson & Front last fall. Great
Greek dishes and decor. I had the artichoke & feta ravioli, which I highly
recommend. Also try the Yiaourti me Meli - Greek yogurt with spiced walnuts
& dates drizzled with Greek Attiki honey. If you like coffee, and I know you
do, try their stone-ground coffee heated over hot sand. Rich and strong. :)

Have fun out there!

Hey DN you may find Spearhead there somewhere & finally find out what happened to him, I think he is working at one of the clubs Voracious mentioned

:D really what happened to that guy?

just remember to watch your step, you might trip over a bum.

From what I hear, most of the bums/beggars make more than most of us....

(heck, everyone makes more than me...LOL)

Milpitas is about 20 mile north, Los Gatos is the last town off highway 17/880 before you go over the hill to Santa Cruz :D

Frogfish,
Man...I remember Los Gatos. My roomie in college was dating a girl from down that way. We used to go down and drink at some bar, I think it was called "The Black Cat" or something of the sort. Dunno...never was the designated driver.

There is a nice medium-price Italian place near Union Square we go to sometimes called Scala's Bistro. It is on the ground floor of the Sir Francis Drake hotel. It is open fairly late, kind of nice if you are flying in at night and wondering what will still be taking customers.

thats so funny, but it is probably more true than most realize. i have a good friend that lives there and he said that they get paid like $500 every month from the city and with the $ they beg for, im sure they do pretty good

Maybe the Black Watch it's a popular watering hole

Yeah! That sounds right. Must have been a couple of decades ago, so my recollection may be hazy. :(
